About this Workshop This one-day workshop will blend cutting-edge neurobiology with treatment strategies supporting a range of professionals, clinicians, educators and caregivers who serve the Autism Spectrum Disordered population. Deeper and current understanding of the mechanisms of the brain-body science of ASD will support participants in making evidence informed choices of treatments for individual clients across a wide range of treatment modalities. Learning Objectives: 1. The learner will develop a preliminary understanding of the current science of genetic/environmental interaction in the development of ASD. 2. The learner will begin to understand the science of sensory regulation, neuroplasticity and therapeutic intervention. 3. The learner will develop an understanding of how the immune system and the brain interact and how this affects behavior. 4. The learner will be introduced to treatment techniques to support regulation (sensory, cognitive and emotional). Workshop Agenda Tuesday, February 5 9:00 9:15 Welcome and Introduction Presenter: Kim Barthel, OTR Kim Barthel is a world-renowned teacher and occupational therapist, actively supporting multi-disciplinary function and healing in many cultures. A pioneer in reinforcing the importance of relationship in therapy, she is known for blending cutting-edge developments in neuroscience with the art of compassionate inquiry. With 30+ years as an OT, Kim s specialties include Neuro-Developmental Treatment, Sensory Processing, Complex Behaviour, Autism, Mental Health, Trauma Informed Practice, and Attachment. To empower personal reflection, she recently co-authored the national best-seller Conversations with a Rattlesnake with NHL hockey legend Theo Fleury. Kim s mission is to support the conscious evolution of the human spirit. Full time students (3+ classes per semester) must provide proof of enrolment EARLY BIRD DEADLINE (WHEN APPLICABLE) Registration and payment must be received by this date. Lunches are not included unless otherwise stated. CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS Many accrediting organizations recognize these, and other, workshops. Upon completion of the workshop and receipt of a Certificate, you may approach any of the following, plus others, to request continuing education credits: Canadian Psychological Association (recognized by the Alberta College of Social Workers), Canadian Counselling & Psychotherapy Association, Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation, Canadian vocational Rehabilitation Association, Canadian Professional Counselling Association, Employee Assistance Certification Commission (EAPA), Indigenous Certification Board of Canada (ICBOC).
