Jenkins Cancer Center (An ECU and Vidant Health Collaboration in Cancer Care), the UNC Cancer Network and UNC Comprehensive Cancer Support Program Programs of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, School of Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Coping with Cancer Symposium The experience of cancer can be extremely challenging for patients, families, and clinicians. Sensitive attention to psychosocial needs is an essential component of comprehensive cancer care. This course is designed to provide data driven and practical recommendations for coping with the challenges of cancer. Target audience: This conference has been designed for Oncology, Family Medicine, and Internal Medicine physicians and others, including physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, psychologists, clergy, pharmacists, physical therapists, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, patient advocates, individuals coping with cancer treatment, caregivers, family members and cancer survivors. For Saturday only: Upon completion of this course, those attending should have greater understanding and knowledge of strategies to integrate into practice new developments in the following: Geriatric Oncology (am) Discuss the demographics of cancer and aging Describe how to practically assess the functional status of older cancer Describe available tools for geriatric assessment and treatment decisions Evaluate patients for the risk of chemotherapy toxicity Cancer Treatment Symptom Control (am) Outline strategies for treatment symptom control for patients with cancer Discuss management of treatment adverse events Identify treatment symptoms and adverse events Long-term Surveillance of Cancer Patients (am) Understand the goals of long term surveillance Discuss the appropriate use of imaging for long term surveillance Understand how surveillance plans may vary by tumor type Update on Colon, Lung and Breast Cancer (am) Colon Review recent advances in the surgical treatment of colon cancer Discuss outcomes for patients with resected stage IV colorectal cancer in the modern chemotherapy era Lung Review the proven survival benefit of lung cancer screening Outline the driver mutations and pharmacogenomics that individually guide the treatment of lung cancer Discuss the curative benefit of aggressive multi-modality treatment of lung cancer Breast Review benefit of adjuvant therapy Explain genomic tools for elucidating breast cancer biology Discuss use of genomic tools for predicting recurrence risk and individualizing treatment Breakout Sessions (pm) Palliative Care Describe management strategies for palliative care Compare complications and comorbidities associated with symptom control Discuss psychosocial issues in palliative care that may influence the disease process Implement a multidisciplinary plan for pain assessment and management Geriatric Oncology Minimizing the deleterious effects of chemotherapy in elderly cancer patients Explain the work up and management of common problems associated with cancer in the elderly Review of important comorbid conditions Functional status considerations for chemotherapy and radiation therapy in the elderly Cancer Symptom Treatment Control Define cancer-related fatigue and review its management Discuss a multidisciplinary approach to the management of treatment symptoms and adverse events Identify various different interventions for treatment symptom control and to know when and how to incorporate them into treatment
