This course is designed to educate and update the primary care physician on a range of relevant neurologic topics with an emphasis on up-todate recommendations and treatment algorithms. Topics will cover movement disorders, managing patients with carotid artery disease, approaches in peripheral neuropathy, management of common seizures, diagnosis and risk reduction in dementia and common spine conditions. Teaching methods include lectures, case presentation and Q&A with faculty. target audience: This course is appropriate for physicians in general and family practice, internal medicine, neurology, hospital medicine and geriatrics. This course will also be of interest to physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals. objectives: At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to: Review ALS, ALS from mutations from C9or72, and association with frontotemporal dementia Discuss antisense oligonucleotide therapies Specify the key features of hyper and hypokinetic movement disorders Review the spectrum of drug induced movement disorders Describe the role of surgery in movement disorders Apply knowledge about new carotid stenting techniques to choose appropriate patients for referral Apply a logical diagnostic approach to the patient with numb feet Summarize the risks and benefits of failure to treat a first unprovoked seizure in an adult Integrate knowledge about screening for driving safety in the care of the dementia patient Identify three evidence based risk reduction strategies for dementia Specify the difference in the history of pain for a patient with disc disease vs. lumbar spinal stenosis Accreditation with Commendation: Virginia Mason Medical Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. credit designation: Virginia Mason Medical Center designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
