Cancer Support Scotland AGM & Speakers Morning 2016 This half day conference will focus on the needs of people affected by cancer and this year s theme is Bridging the Fundraising Gap Who should attend? We would welcome your attendance at our AGM and Speakers Morning if you are a cancer patient, carer, close relative, friend or charity partner. Why should I attend? The Speakers Moring focus is to bring political, cancer specialists and business leaders together to explain the issues surrounding cancer care, volunteering and funding. Following each speaker there will be time to ask a couple of questions to each guest speaker. What will I gain from attending? You will gain a better understanding of the issues faced by oncologists and how Cancer Support Scotland and other third sector organisations can help deliver the best possible support and practical help to patients, their family and carers. What will it cost me? The conference is free to attend and a buffet lunch will be provided. Travel Arrangements? Parking is limited at the Calman Centre, we advise you use public transport or share a car. Parking is also available at The Pond Hotel at 3 for three hours. The nearest train station is Hyndland, about 10 minutes walk to our Centre. BACKGROUND ON GUEST SPEAKERS Speaker 1 Martin Docherty-Hughes MP Born in 1971 and raised by his parents in Clydebank, and working from the age of 16 Martin joined the SNP in 1991 being elected as Scotland s youngest Councillor to the then Clydebank District Council in 1992 at the age of 21. In 1997 Martin graduated from GCFT now Glasgow Met with an HND in Business Administration, then earned his Politics degree from University of Essex and in 2004, attended the Glasgow School of Art to undertake his Master s Degree. On finishing his studies Martin spent nearly a decade working for West Dunbartonshire Community and Volunteering Services (WDCVS), supporting and developing West Dunbartonshire s community and volunteering organisations. Martin s interest in local government continued and in 2012 was elected as an SNP Councillor in Glasgow City Council representing the Anderston & City ward. In 2015, Martin was elected as the MP for West Dunbartonshire and was appointed as a member of the SNP Defence team. Speaker 2 - Dr. Brendan McCann is an Oncologist at the West of Scotland Beatson Oncology Centre. Brendan has also been diagnosed with cancer and will speak as a patient and from an Oncologists point of view. Speaker 3 - John Watson OBE is one of the country s foremost and most admired business voices. As former Chairman and Chief Executive of the printing dynasty John Watson and Company, he spent 50 years at the iconic business which under his leadership carved out a global reputation for printing excellence. John Watson is an influential business figure in Scotland and beyond. John remains active on the business scene and is well known for his deep commitment to philanthropy and helping businesses led by entrepreneurs to grow and flourish. Other Speakers Craig Mackie is the Chair of Trustee for Cancer Support Scotland. Craig is the Director of SHINE, a creative design studio based in Glasgow. Craig overseeing the Charity at a very interesting time as it tries to deal with a surge in demand for Cancer Support Services, expansion the Outreach Partnership projects and the challenges around funding. Craig also volunteers for PSYBT as a mentor for newly formed businesses in Glasgow. Colin Graham has been the Chief Executive of Cancer Support Scotland for the last five years. Colin has lead the organisation through extensive change and the surge in demand. Colin has extensive knowledge within the Third Sector having worked in it for the last 20 years. He has a passion for leadership, fundraising and marketing to enable the charity to continually invest in service provision for people affected by cancer.
