Endometriosis UK Trustee Board Members Description of the role and person specification Background Endometriosis UK is the largest UK charity for women with endometriosis. Endometriosis UK works to: Provide support to women with endometriosis and their families and friends Provide clear, objective information about the condition and its treatments Raise awareness amongst health professionals and the general public about the condition Support research into endometriosis. This is an unpaid role. Reasonable pre-agreed travel expenses will be paid. Time commitment: Five meetings a year (including preparation for meetings, reading papers etc) + attendance at an annual strategy day and AGM. Additionally, trustees are invited to attend Endometriosis UK events. In January 2017 we are recruiting for THREE NEW TRUSTEES to join the board with expertise in the following areas: 1. Marketing and communications including digital 2. Charity income generation and fundraising 3. Health policy and campaigning.
The role of the Board of Trustees and duties of trustees At its simplest, the role of the trustee board is to receive assets from donors, safeguard them and apply them to the charitable purposes of Endometriosis UK. The board sets the strategic direction of the charity. The board must always act in the best interests of Endometriosis UK, exercising the same standards of duty of care that a prudent person would apply if looking after the affairs of someone for whom they have responsibility. The trustee board must act as a group and not as individuals. The duties of a trustee board member are to: ensure that Endometriosis UK complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulation; ensure that the charity pursues its charitable objects as defined in its governing document; ensure that the charity applies its resources exclusively in furtherance of its objects, i.e. the charity must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objects, no matter how worthwhile or charitable those activities are; contribute actively to the board of trustees role of giving clear strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets; safeguard the good name and values of the charity; ensure the effective and efficient administration of the charity; ensure the financial stability of the charity. In addition to the above statutory duties, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. The trustee board is also responsible for recruiting, managing and supporting the Chief Executive.
Trustee Person Specification Each trustee must have: strategic vision commitment to Endometriosis UK, its mission, vision and values willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to be an effective trustee good, independent judgement willingness to speak their mind and ability to provide effective support and challenge in a board setting ability to think creatively and imaginatively understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship an ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to take decisions for the good of Endometriosis UK integrity. Additional skills required by trustees with specific areas of expertise: Charity income generation and fundraising Experience of operating at a senior level within a charity with responsibility for income generation and fundraising Understanding and experience of a diverse range of income streams Willingness to provide support and advice to Endometriosis UK s staff team on fundraising An understanding of the challenges facing small charities in maximising income streams and donor cultivation. Understanding of best practice in fundraising ethics and good practice Marketing and communications including digital Experience of marketing and communications with relevance to Endometriosis UK
Willingness to provide support and advice to Endometriosis UK s staff team on marketing and communications An understanding of the challenges facing small organisations in delivering effective marketing and communications and of the opportunities for more effective use of digital Health policy and campaigning Understanding of health policy and delivery systems and track record of effective campaigning on health issues, ideally across all four nations of the UK Willingness to provide support and advice to Endometriosis UK s staff team on health policy and campaigning An understanding of the challenges facing small health charities in campaigning for better care and treatment Further information about Endometriosis UK s governance and Board of Trustees Skill set required by Endometriosis UK Board of Trustees Endometriosis UK has undertaken a skills audit and considered the ideal make-up of the Board of Trustees. Our ideal board would include the following skills and experience: Strategic planning Charity finance and audit and risk management Marketing and communications with a particular emphasis on awareness raising and digital communications Income Generation/Fundraising Lived experience of endometriosis (including the perspective of younger women) and experience as a partner/carer/family member of a woman with endometriosis Female health (especially endometriosis, fertility, pain management) in secondary and primary care settings Legal in relation to Endometriosis UK s work Volunteer Management Health policy and political campaigning Having networks of influential contacts able to support Endometriosis UK. One Trustee may have the required skills in more than one area but the overall membership of the Board should provide the necessary skills in all these areas.
Understanding of endometriosis and membership of Endometriosis UK Potential trustees do not have to have personal experience or knowledge of endometriosis but Endometriosis UK is committed to ensuring that the board would always contain trustees with lived experience of endometriosis. Our current board includes a number of trustees with lived experience of endometriosis alongside the skills and experience they bring to the board. Trustees are asked to demonstrate their interest in and commitment to improving the lives of women with endometriosis. All trustees are required to be members of Endometriosis UK and we would ask new trustees to become a member of the charity before joining the board. Term of Office Trustees serve an initial three year term with an opportunity to serve for a further three years with a maximum term of office of six years. Board meeting schedule These are held at five times a year, currently four half day meetings on Saturdays and one telephone meeting in the evening although trustees are consulted in advance of setting the annual meeting schedule to ensure that it is convenient to the majority. Trustees are able to join some meetings via video or telephone conference facilities if they are not able to attend in person. In addition, the board holds a Strategy Away-Day each year. All trustees are also expected to attend the AGM of the charity and, where possible, training or fundraising events held on occasion throughout the year.
The current trustees are: Angela Style - Chair Melissa Longley Vice Chair Amanda Collier Treasurer Sonya Timms Jayne Tullett Alice Smith (We are recruiting separately for two trustees from the medical profession one a senior consultant and one from primary care). Useful information for applicants Endometriosis UK s recent Annual Reports and Accounts can be found on the organisation s website You can find out more about the Endometriosis UK trustees at All applicants should be aware of the relevant Charity Commission guidance in particular CC3 The Essential Trustee (Updated )
Empowering Women: Endometriosis UK Strategic Plan Introduction Endometriosis UK has made great strides in developing and delivering high-quality support services for sufferers and in raising awareness. Our strategy to 2015 successfully stabilized the charity following challenging times. But there is still much to do: endometriosis is a lifelong, life-changing disease that is as common in women as asthma and diabetes. In spite of this, little is known about endometriosis in the UK, even amongst non-specialist health care professionals (HCPs). Women wait, on average, 7.5 years for a diagnosis. During this time the disease can progress, often causing pain and suffering that has an adverse effect on quality of life. Severe endometriosis affects work, relationships, fertility and just about every aspect of life you can imagine; sufferers must be given a voice and empowered. In this ambitious new strategic plan we aim to consolidate and improve our services, with an intensified emphasis on campaigning for greater public and political awareness of the disease. In turn this focus will allow us to improve resourcing, enabling the charity to grow in the areas of service delivery, research involvement, sphere of influence and links with the NHS in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The charity will continue to work in 4 domains: Service delivery Information Research Campaigning Strategic Outcomes Endometriosis UK is committed to delivering the following strategic outcomes throughout : 1. Better quality of life for women with endometriosis Increased reach of support services Women will be at the centre of support service design All women with endometriosis will have access to the information they need for self-management 2. Better health care for women with endometriosis
Earlier diagnosis Increased numbers of BSGE centres Increased awareness of the disease amongst non-specialist HCPs Increased research funding 3. Increased public and political awareness of endometriosis in the UK Greater prominence on the national health agenda Greater prominence on the political agenda Increased public awareness Strategic Aims In order to achieve these strategic outcomes, Endometriosis UK will focus on four strategic aims. Aims 1-3 are the what and Aim 4 is the how : 1. Improve service delivery 2. Increase campaigning 3. Increase research 4. Develop resourcing 1. Service delivery Endometriosis UK already delivers excellent services given existing resources. These services include support groups, a telephone helpline and an online forum. In light of recent consultation work we understand more about how and where improvements can be made. We will refine this knowledge and implement a programme to improve reach and quality. We will do this by focusing on 5 main areas: Improve information through Information Standard accreditation and develop a series of factsheets on BSGE centres Increase the number of support groups by 30% Increase helpline open hours to 7 days a week, 12 hours a day Develop an advocacy programme Develop impact measurement through a structured process of consultation, evaluation and monitoring 2. Campaigning
The charity has a history of effective campaigns for greater awareness of endometriosis, but in there will be a greater focus on campaigning strategy, honing message and increasing impact. We will achieve this by developing both public and political awareness campaigns in 5 main areas: Review corporate identity including values Develop a theory of change Increase public awareness through a program of annual campaigns Map out and increase involvement with the health frameworks of the 4 nations, including national and local levels and HCPs Develop and implement impact measurement systems 3. Research Endometriosis UK supports research wherever it can with no existing research fund. Although research into endometriosis has increased over the past decade, the case for the inclusion of endometriosis on the Quality and Outcomes Framework and other areas of the national health agenda would benefit from a nationally coordinated approach to research and a research review. In order to work towards this, our Research Strategy will focus on 3 main areas: Targeted annual research plans Increase partnerships and collaborative working Carry out an internal data review 4. Resourcing With the exception of Department of Health project funding, Endometriosis UK receives no delivery funding from statutory sources. The majority of funding comes from donations and fundraising and the charity aims to develop funding streams. Our wonderful volunteers are a valuable resource, saving the charity up to 140,000 each year and we will work even harder to retain and develop them. We will also review existing resources and ensure the charity is working as efficiently as possible to optimise delivery with what we have. In order to achieve this our Resource Strategy will focus on 5 main areas: Develop fundraising strategy Membership review Utilise impact measurement systems to diversify income streams and increase existing ones
Develop robust financial accounting and management systems Invest in staff and volunteer support, training and development April 2015
