Since then, we have assisted Certifying Centres by reviewing a total of eight community applications for international safe community designation (six communities in the United States, and two in China). One of our Members (Larry Zacher) co-chaired the North American Regional Network for the International Safe Communities Network from 2008 2010. Larry has also mentored two Canadian cities seeking designation as safe communities (Halifax, NS and Ottawa, ON) We have attended two international safe community conferences (New Zealand in 2008 and Sweden in 2011); In New Zealand we presented a workshop to delegates on the topic of establishing a community-based safety network.
We participated in a North American Conference on Youth Violence Prevention in 2009 (Orlando, Florida). We participated in national and provincial strategic planning sessions in road safety (Motor Vehicle Safety Institute in 2011) and injury prevention (Safe Communities Canada in 2011). We have attended national safe communities conferences in 2007 (Chatham, Ont.), 2008 (Winnipeg, Man.) and 2010 (Toronto, Ont.); also, we participate in national teleconferences on a regular basis with other members of the Safe Communities Canada network. In 2008, the Brampton Safe City Partnership was recognized as a best practice at a global conference on Disaster Management (hosted by American Society for Industrial Security). A DVD presentation was made at the conference to profile our community safety network. The DVD was viewed by approximately 6,000 delegates. Since 2007, we have received approximately ten delegations from China, Korea, Japan, Australia, Uganda and the United States to learn about our safe community programs and local network.
