Alabama Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf President s Updates Volume, Issue With all of the holiday festivities and seeing family and friends, it keeps us quite busy this time of year. Just remember to take time to sit and breathe and remember the true meaning of Christmas. Don t get caught short on CEUs for the upcoming year. ALBIT Licenses and permits will be renewing in March. There are different opportunities to receive CEUs like workshops, online workshops, and independent studies. On February 20th, ALRID Region 6 in Mobile will be having a workshop for.8 CEUs. (See attached flyer) Join in with Region 6 and have fun. The Council of Organizations Serving Deaf Alabamians (COSDA) will be partnering with ALRID at the 2016 ALRID Conference in June. Don t miss out on the opportunity to learn more about COSDA. Come and join in at the COSDA meeting to learn about the different agencies and organizations that serve the deaf in Alabama. There will be an awards luncheon on the same day as the meeting. On the following day the AL- RID Conference will begin. As we begin the New Year, I hope it will be wonderful with many learning experiences and fellowship with other interpreters as we join together. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! December 2015 Board of Directors President: Susan Gordon (Tuscaloosa) Vice President: Sue Graham (Sylacauga) Secretary: Chris McGaha (Chelsea) Treasurer: Sharon Spencer (Mobile) Member-at-Large: Karen Gunter (Montgomery) Member-at-Large: Stacie Yarbrough (Huntsville) Student Representative: Dorothy Vernon (Troy University ITP) AAD Representative: Ben Hollingsworth (Huntsville) Immediate Past President: Belinda Montgomery (Montgomery) The Louise Wohlford Memorial Scholarship The purpose of the Louise Wohlford Memorial Scholarship Fund is to provide payment of registration fees for conferences or workshops providing RID CEUs. Interpreters may request a scholarship for the Early Bird registration rate. A total maximum of $2,000 may be awarded per calendar year from this fund. Multiple scholarship applications from an individual will be accepted, however primary consideration will be given to applicants who have yet to receive funds. Page 2 Alabama Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Region 3 update We had our first Interpreter Night Out on November 9th. Approximately 16 interpreters from across the region gathered at a Mexican restaurant in Pell City. We had a brainstorming session for ALRID and AIDB. Some great ideas were shared and friendships were strenghtened. Our next Interpreter Night Out will be on January 12, 2016. More details to come! Region 6 update On November 17th, 2015 we held a workshop- Awareness Model: The 3 R s Receive, Relay, and Retrieve presented by Beverly Bownds. It was held at AIDB, Mobile Regional Center and we had 24 participants. Beverly comes to Mobile from Hawaii and has over 30 years of Certified Interpreting experience in all settings. We all enjoyed this workshop and were able to learn some new methods of relaxation, as well as share experiences in this safe environment. Bev has a positive and enthusiastic love of the profession and it created a very safe place for everyone. This workshop was enjoyed by all and we hope to have her come back to present more workshops for us! From Billie Thompson: The EIPA Performance Exam will be March 2-3, 2016 in Talladega, AL at AIDB. The exact location will be determined soon.
