1 Newsletter Date Volume 1, Issue 1 Upcoming Events PMI Northern Utah Chapter Introduction June 2014 Newsletter As we get into the warmer months (in theory; this past weekend was downright COLD!) of the summer, things naturally slow down for many of us. As members of the PMI Northern Utah Chapter Board of Directors, the summer months are the months where we prepare for and go through a number of transitions. As you have hopefully seen, elections are upon us, and we are excited to get your votes for all positions of our Board of Directors. We hope to see you all at our upcoming dinner event on July 17th - everyone s invited, and we are taking the opportunity to show our appreciation to those who have volunteered their time and effort with us over the past year. Read on for more details. As always, reach out to us online or in person for questions, feedback, and suggestions. A Message from our President This month, I simply want to say THANK YOU! It is a great time to be a Project Manager. It is a great time to be a member of PMI and the Northern Utah Chapter. There are so many opportunities to learn and grow: development conferences, new certifications (Portfolio Management Professional and Professional Business Analyst), training, mentoring, chapter meetings, webinars, networking, service projects, and more. Thank you for being a part of all of this and making our chapter, and our members, great. I look forward to seeing you at our next event! Inside this issue: Introduction 1 Presidents Message 1 Upcoming Events 1 What s your Story 2 Bylaws Voting 3 Board Elections 4 Professional Development 5 Adam Tidwell President, PMI Northern Utah Chapter CURRENT CHAPTER MEMBERS = 984 Community Outreach 6 Connect With Us 6 1
2 Board Member Spotlight: What s Your Story? This year, we would like to give you some insight into some of our PMI-NUC Board members and what inspires them to do what they do. Volunteerism is what keeps this chapter going, and if you are interested in volunteering with us, please reach out to volunteers@projectmanager.org (we need your help!) For this sixth edition of What s Your Story, we chat with Teri Gee our chapter Vice President of Outreach When did you first become involved with PMI? At what point did you join the Northern Utah Chapter? Although I had attended some of the local chapter events, I didn t become a member of PMI until July of 2012 when I was preparing for the PMP exam. When I saw how much valuable information was available on the national site, I immediately joined the NUC Chapter as well. The opportunities for professional development credits are abundant and I found articles on topics of specific interest to me, such as earned value management and requirement elicitation tools. Why did you become involved with PMI and PMI-NUC? What were you hoping to get out of it? I was initially interested in PMI and PMI-NUC to promote networking with others in the profession and learn more about the ways they solve problems. I quickly found that the members are very friendly and it s easy to get acquainted with others. I also wanted to be sure that I kept my professional development units current. What was your first involvement with volunteering? Why did you get involved? As the VP of Community Outreach, my first project is the Future Workforce Initiative. Our goal is to bring an awareness of project management as a career choice and a life skill. As the demographics of our country change and baby boomers retire, we need skilled young people to fill the enormous gap that will be created. We have been building relationships with teachers and Career and Technology Education leaders. We are discovering that exciting opportunities exist at many levels and are working to narrow our focus. This past April, PMI-NUC sponsored the Utah Chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). Several Board members and volunteers staffed a booth, handed out literature, swag and candy and told students and teachers alike about project management. It was a great experience one that we hope to repeat at other student organization conferences. We are always looking for more volunteers. What drove you to seek a position on the board? What were you hoping to get out of it? In September of last year, I learned of an opening on the PMI NUC Board of Directors and decided to toss my hat into the ring. I had just made a radical (and scary!) decision to leave a position of 20 years and was exploring different options. Considering a volunteer position and one with a fair amount of responsibility was part of a journey to re-invent my career, build my network and find the right job. And it worked! What you have gotten out of being on the board? What is the one thing (one win) that you can point to from your involvement? For me, one of the greatest advantages of being on the Board is a sense that my world expanded over night. My network had grown exponentially with the board, the Future Workforce Initiative Volunteers and the members. After working in a small organization with remote clients, it was such a joy to be working with smart, fun and dedicated people...who also understood my challenges. How would you respond to the question Why should I be involved on the board or as a volunteer for PMI-NUC? Make this an elevator speech, you only have a few floors in which to respond. PMI-NUC offers multiple opportunities to participate in professional development and career building activities while also serving the community in which we live. And it s fun! Thank you to Teri for sharing your story with us, and for all the great work you do on the board! Finally, feel free to reach out to any of your friendly board members for questions, volunteering opportunities, or to provide us with some of your valued suggestions and feedback. Find us at: 2
3 Chapter By-Laws Updates: Approved! A big thank you to everyone who participated in the vote on the proposed updates to the PMI Northern Utah Chapter's By-Laws. Based on the vote, the proposed changes were approved. As a result, two additional executive vice president roles have been added to the board: EVP of Education and EVP of Operations. Read on in this newsletter to find information on the current board elections. The Bylaws also provide for procedures for the chapter to begin forming satellite chapters in remote locations throughout Utah to continue to grow our chapter. BYLAWS 3
4 PMI-NUC Board of Director Elections The PMI Northern Utah Chapter will be conducting elections for positions on the 2014 thru 2016 Board of Directors. Serving on the chapter board provides you with an excellent opportunity to participate in the strategic planning and execution activities that are crucial to the successful operation and growth of our chapter. In addition, it is an excellent differentiator on one's resume, and provides an ideal opportunity to volunteer within your profession. The chapter membership has previously approved the use of a web-based online voting service for conducting chapter elections. This capability provides voting access to the entire membership of the chapter. The results of the elections will be communicated via an announcement to all members and will also be formally announced to the attending membership at the July 17th dinner event, Election Timeline June 1 thru June 20 Nominations accepted for open Board positions June 20 thru June 30 Membership votes on nominees July 1 Winners are announced July 1, 2014 thru June 30, 2016 Chapter Board is active For elections information contact the Chapter President at president@projectmanager.org As the new Board sets its strategy and tactical plans for the upcoming year, we will be looking to fill the volunteer roster for the year.
