FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT IS THE IGNATIAN FAMILY TEACH-IN FOR JUSTICE (IFTJ)? Each year, this national conference draws 1,800+ passionate individuals nationwide desiring to learn, reflect, pray, network, and advocate in the context of social justice and solidarity. Program features include: internationally-recognized keynote speakers, 40+ breakout sessions on social justice issues and skills, networking sessions, an advocacy day on Capitol Hill, and opportunities for prayer and reflection grounded in the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola. IFTJ was born out of a response to the 1989 murder of 6 Jesuit priests in El Salvador who were killed for their work with economically poor and marginalized people throughout Central America. Starting in 1997, IFTJ took place in Columbus, GA and coincided with a nonviolent vigil calling for the closure of the U.S. Army School of the Americas where many of those responsible for the 1989 murders were trained. In 2010, the Teach-In moved to Washington, D.C., broadened the scope of social justice issues addressed, and integrated opportunities for legislative advocacy on contemporary human rights and environmental justice issues. WHO ATTENDS IFTJ? IFTJ annually attracts university and high school students, parish members, current and former volunteers, alumni of Jesuit and partner institutions, and others who are committed to social justice inspired by faith. In 2017, nearly 1,500 of the 1,800+ attendees were under the age of 25. Attendees hail from coast to coast, especially states with Jesuit schools and parishes. WHO ARE THE KEYNOTES FOR 2018? Keynotes include Bishop George V. Murry, S.J., chair of the USCCB Anti-racism Task Force and Nichole Flores, Ph.D., theologian at the University of Virginia. WHAT IS THE IGNATIAN SOLIDARITY NETWORK? The Ignatian Solidarity Network (ISN) is a national social justice education and advocacy organization inspired by the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola (founder of the Jesuit order of Catholic priests and brothers). ISN was founded in 2004 and is a lay-led 501(c)(3) non-profit organization working in partnership with Jesuit universities, high schools, parishes, and social ministries, along with many other Catholic institutions and social justice partners. ISN s constituencies include students, parishioners, alumni, faculty and staff, and others who desire to be leaders for social justice. Individuals participate in a broad range of social justice education, advocacy, and leadership programs year-round and network online utilizing ISN s website, social media platforms, etc. WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE?
