Course Director: Arturo Ayala Arcipreste MD FAANS Skull Base & Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery Course Description: The course has been designed to provide candidates opportunity to enhance their skills in the surgical field provided: 1.- During the course will discuss the surgical anatomy and operative techniques of each skull base region trough lectures, cases and video presentations. 2.-During the hands-on course will perform the most frequent and effective approaches in skull base surgery in cadaver specimen. 3.- The candidates will practice the principles of vascular dissection and preparing vessels to perform a by-pass techniques in a anesthetized wistar rat. Course details: Skull base lab: There are 7 stations in our lab. Each station is equipped with ZEISS microscope, drills, micro instruments...etc. We will place two active participants in one station: two active candidates per head. We can also have two observers (no hands on) on every station. By-pass lab: There are 8 stations equipated with Zeiss microscopes, micro instruments, microsutures, etc.. Each station will be supplied with a Wistar Rat (300g) under anesthesia, and all the time a the professors will be supervising the procedures and a veterinary is present to help during the practice.
