FEAR Weakness?? Cowardice?? A gift: Keeps us alive

FEAR There are those who know no fear and they do the job. There are those who know fear and no one knows it, and they do the job. There are those who know fear and everyone sees it and smells it, but it does not matter because the job gets done. There are those who know fear and everyone knows it because they failed to do the job.

The Winning Mind

The Winning Mind Winning is the goal Every situation is winnable It is okay to WIN Use skills, knowledge, and tactics Think offense - NOT defense It isn t always pretty Survival is a by-product of winning

Teaching Officers to WIN Now winning takes many forms. It can range from the use of effective communication skills to gain the voluntary compliance of an enemy or subject to the use of lethal force to win a confrontation by taking the life of the enemy. Sgt. Brian Willis

The Winning Mind This is the law. The only purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense. The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either. The next weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental. The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights, John Steinbeck

The Winning Mind You need to prepare your mind, for where your body may have to go. Patrolwoman Stacy F. Lim, Los Angeles Police Department, California

The Winning Mind Prey behavior Invites Predator action

BE THE PREDATOR

Predators Being a predator isn t always comfortable but the only other option is to be the prey. That is not an acceptable option. Phil Messina

The Winning Mind Remember: If You Are In It, WIN IT!

Mind Set In my mind, I m never going to die in no ghetto. Absolutely never. If a man tries to punch me in the head, the fight is on. If he cuts me, the fight is on. If I m shot, the fight is on. I m not losing no fight to no scumbag out there in no ghetto. That s it. No son-of-abitch out there is going to get me. The only way he gets me is to cut my head off, and I mean that. I ll fight you while I got a breath left in me. I don t think any of those animals in that street can beat me. I ve gone that way for 18 years of street service, street duty, and that s the way I m going to keep on going. You don t lose the fight. Jim Phillips. Calibre Press video, Surviving Edged Weapons, 1988

Warrior Perhaps the most misused term in the media Under used when relating to law enforcement officer We need to change this image

Warriors There must be warriors, good warriors. paladins Lt. Col. D. Grossman If in a war than you are a warrior. (war on drugs / war on crime etc. He who would have peace, must prepare for war George Washington

The Role of the New Warrior To protect, preserve and defend The democratic ethical warrior (Alexis Artwohl, Ph.D)

Sheep / Wolves & Sheepdogs Sheep the general public 1. Does not like violence / confrontation. 2. Has a like / love for fellow man. 3. Conforms to the laws of civilization. 4. Fears the wolf. 5. Officer Safety Pyramid Without knowledge, Skills cannot be focused. Without Skills, Strength cannot be brought to bear and without Strength, knowledge may not be applied. Alexander the Great s Chief Physician

Commitment is the Mortar that Binds the blocks together.

Commitment to Win Victory at all costs, victory in spite of terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory there is no survival. Sir Winston Churchill

Winning Now winning takes many forms. It can range from the USE OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS to gain the voluntary compliance of an enemy or subject to the use of lethal force to win a confrontation by taking the life of the enemy. Sgt. Brian Willis

Commitment To Train Train hard for the unexpected and when it happens it will be neither hard, nor unexpected.

Commitment To Family Spartans excuse without penalty the warrior who loses his helmet or breastplate in battle, but punish with loss of citizenship rights the man who discards his shield. Because a warrior carries a helmet and breastplate for his own protection, but his shield is for the protection of the whole line. Gates of Fire, Steven Pressfield

Commitment To Life Long Learning When the Master is no longer the student; he is no longer the Master.

The Warrior Spirit

New Warriors, New Paladins, Sheep Dogs Knights of old : Armor, weapon, shield (authority to do good deeds and administer justice through the land) Law Enforcement Officers: Vest, gun, badge (authority to do good deeds and administer justice through the land)

A warrior is on permanent guard against the roughness of human behavior. A warrior is magical and ruthless, a maverick with the most refined taste and manners, whose worldly task is to sharpen, yet disguise, his cutting edge so that no one would be able to suspect his ruthlessness....the Power of Silence by Carlos Castaneda

Warriors The Warrior fights because he believes that he is fighting for something good, something positive, something that will improve the quality of the world around him. The Warrior never forgets that he is an example and so will always act accordingly. He is a leader, and when there is no one to lead, the warrior must lead himself forward to a different higher standard.

Warriors Justice, NOT vengeance. Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, U.S. Army Retired To protect, preserve and defend

The Warrior Challenge Of every 100 men, 10 should not even be here. 80 are nothing more than targets. 9 are the real fighters. We are lucky to have them, for they the battle make. Ah, but the one. One of them is a Warrior and he will bring the others back. Hericletus 500 BC

Winning Mind and Warrior Spirit By developing the winning mind and warrior spirit you can: 1. Reduce reaction time 2. Reduce the effects of survival stress: Dr. Honig 3. Ensure that your reactions are more desireable

Always Remember: 1. Winning begins, and ends with YOU. 2. Be the predator, NOT the prey. 3. Train the way you want to fight, train with imagination and emotion, then you will fight the way you train.

Always Remember: "Policing isn't pretty. I'm sorry. If people would just give up, throw their hands up, it would be great. But they run, they shoot us, they fight us, bite us and it's not pretty." Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton

The Mind Model

The Mind Model Understanding and Unlocking the Power of the Mind

Harness the Power of the Mind Destiny is not a matter of chance; it s a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for; it s a thing to be achieved. William Jennings Bryan 1860 1925, Speaker, Lawyer and Presidential Candidate

Harness the Power of the Mind Within you right now is the power to do things you never dreamed possible. This power becomes available to you just as soon as you can change your beliefs. Dr. Maxwell Maltz 1889 1975, Author

The Mind is like: A box of chocolates. A parachute.

The Mind Two main parts to the mind Process the same information but in different ways Speak different languages

The Conscious Mind The mind is like an iceberg, it floats with one-seventh of its bulk above water. ~ Sigmund Freud The Subconscious Mind

The Conscious Mind

Analytical Combination of Joe Friday and Mr. Spock Analyze possible solutions Selects the most logical one Valuable tool for investigators Often bypassed in high stress events

Rational Comes up with a reasonable explanation or justification for our actions. Makes excuses when no reasonable explanation is available. In high gear on traffic stops, or when you ask a cop the question WHY?

Short Term Memory Working memory. Information we can access at a conscious level. Limited capacity.

Conscious Mind Will Power Will: the faculty of conscious and deliberate choice of action (Collins Concise Dictionary) Willpower: 1. The ability to control oneself and determine one s actions. 2. Firmness of will. (Collins Concise Dictionary) Will vs. Imagination.

The Subconscious Mind

Emotion The language of the subconscious mind Intuition/Sixth Sense tuere : to guard, to protect Crisis Intervention Stress Inoculation Training

Imagination The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by sceptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by obvious realities. We need men and women who can dream of things that never were. John F. Kennedy 1917-1963

Imagination Always Working Sometimes positive, sometimes negative Imagery

Imagination Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world. Albert Einstein

Imagination Our self image is contained in the subconscious mind. You can t outperform your self image. Dennis Connor Positive self-talk is CRITICAL!!!

TRAIN THE WAY YOU WANT TO FIGHT, TRAIN WITH EMOTION AND IMAGINATION; THEN YOU WILL FIGHT THE WAY YOU TRAIN.

Habits Habit will be your champion. When you train the mind to think one way, when you refuse to allow it to think in another, that will produce great strength in battle. Habit is a mighty ally. The habit of FEAR and ANGER, or the habit of SELF-COMPOSURE and COURAGE. The Gates of Fire, Steven Pressfield

Habits Create good training habits. Link emotion to desirable habits. Make winning a habit.

Long Term Memory Records and stores every event in our life. Searches starting at the top of the stack thus the importance of ongoing training. Training and imagery will create an entire index of solutions. The student s experience in training helps to take some of the surprise out of it when the real situation arises. Lt. Col D. Grossman If no solution is found, often the result is less desirable.

Self Preservation Job is to protect us against any threats: REAL or IMAGINED. Performance anxiety. Phobias. Mind can accept or reject ANY suggestion.

Our Words Sticks and Stones Will Break My Bones, But Words are devastating. Bruce Smith Ph.D

The Subconscious Mind is Literal Words Have Power

Learn to communicate in positive terms what you want of yourself and others.

Self Talk The most important conversations you will ever have are with yourself, about yourself in the privacy of your own mind. Robert Brenner

Self Talk If you had a friend who talked to you like you sometimes talk to yourself, would you continue to hang around with that person? Rob Brenner

Words to remove from your vocabulary Don t Try Weak Hand Routine
