Working with Athletes Impressions based on my psychological work with rowing athletes 1

Dr. Annelen Collatz FISA 2013 2

Personality Traits of Elite Rowers Commitment Discipline Social skills Co- operanon Dominance Stability Unstable Type Dr. Annelen Collatz Team Player Individualist FISA 2013 Leader Type (Mennigen, 2010) 3

Unstable Type Ø Will have greater difficulnes in social contexts and under pressure than the other three types Ø Individual coaching with regard to social skills and stability (emonon- regulanng training, relaxanon techniques, posinve thinking and finding out the causes of the low stability) Team Player InterpretaNon of Personality Types Ø Are important for a good performing boat team Ø Fits well into a group structure Ø Can be a stabilising factor in team conflicts 4

Individualist InterpretaNon of Personality Types Ø Preferably suitable for individual disciplines like Single Scull Ø More difficulnes in large boats as many social interacnons take place Ø Needs lots of freedom, e. g. let him do several coaching units on his own Ø Strong tendency towards autonomy reacts neganvely to an authoritarian coaching style Ø Difficult to monvate the development of social skills, as no insight exists 5

Leader Type InterpretaNon of Personality Types Ø Wants to have the leading posinon in a team Ø Wants to have a say in team meenngs, training arrangements etc. Ø Too many athletes of this type in a boat can become crincal due to their unfulfilled claim to leadership Ø Can significantly influence a team - in any direcnon Ø Psychological intervennon important when claim to leadership cannot be fulfilled reducnon of frustranon and conflict potennal 6

Coaching Topics with Athletes Dual career planning Dealing with failures SporNve burnout Issues with the coach Personal issues 9

Dual Carrer Planning Athletes do not earn any money in Germany doing compennve sports Companies consider spornng careers only partly as a success factor there is an increasing tendency to look at how long a student has studied University studies or traineeship/ apprennceship parallel to compennve sport Only doing compennve sport Benefit: all power and energy focused on compennve sport detriment: No real changes on the labour market acer his sports career ends if it doesn`t workout within a year, there`s a danger of demonvanon 10

Dual Career Planning There are career advisors in all the training centres in Germany they work in all kinds of sports They support athletes in looking for traineeships/ apprennceship (in specific cooperanon with companies) They advise on the choice of studies and support enrollment at the right place of study Some universines prefer elite athletes with university entrance qualificanons 11

Dual Career Planning I support athletes in deciding for a dual career (the German Rowing Fed. is giving consideranon in 2013/2014 to athletes` courses of studies when planning training programmes in camp). It`s important athletes use these 2 years to establish their professional course. Some athletes have difficulnes combining rowing and studies, parncularly when one`s place in an elite squad has to be won yet. I support athletes with their monthly and anual dual career planning. 12

Mental Toughness Ability to reach one`s physical limits Having long- term goals to intrinsically monvate oneself Belief in oneself Mental toughness Ability to remain focussed Awareness of oneself and one`s abilines Controlling thought and feelings 13

Dealing with Failures AgribuNon Style Global Internal External Stabil Unstabil Stabil Unstabil I m not talented enough. I cannot preper meyself for compennons properly. Always has to train so hard before compennon that no one cannot recover from it. My training schedule is so full this year that there`s no Nme to recover and relaxe. Specific I m not talented enough to cover the compennve distance. I haven t prepared myself properly for this compennon. Training is always so hard that I cannot recover from it. I had to train so hard before this compennon that I couldn`t recover from it. 14

Example Case 15

Conclusions Unstable type IntervenNon: Learn to communicate in a more listener- oriented manner AgribuNon style is internal/ stable / global when it comes to failures Tendency to overpace in training sessions Athlete is extremly fearful when it comes to failing in his studies (his best and worst case scenarios) He wants to be liked by everyone, but is too quick- tempered and harsh with others (athletes and coach) Partly has social problems within the training team I m snll coaching him to change his agribunon style, but this needs Nme 16

Example Case - Burnout 17

Example Case Burnout II 2009 2013 18

Conclusions He doesn`t feel any sansfacnon or joy following a success He feels empty He has problems with his monvanon I`m trying to improve his protecnng factors to do with his pychological consntunon Ø Where are his ressources? Ø What makes him proud? Ø What stops him feeling proud and sansfied? 19

CooperaNon Medical therapeuncal team doctor psychologist head of physiotherapy 20

Problems with the Coach Bad communicanon with the coach Athlete feels he has been unfairly treated He quesnons the coach`s decision about the selecnon process A coach`s nervousness is passed over to the athelets before a compennon I show them how they can distance themselves from this 21

Personal Topics Family problems Lack of support within one`s social environment Divorce / separanon of parents Partner problems 22

Summary Athletes in a training team don t know who works with me it s apparently snll a sign of weakness to work with a psychologist Athletes are extremly greakul for psychological support When an athlete benents from psychological care, then really well As athletes are relanvly young, psychological intervennon works quicker and it`s easier to implement change 23
