ATHOLTON HIGH December 2, 2016 Atholton Community, Congratulations to the AHS Raider Volleyball team for capturing a 4-set win over Damascus to win the 3A State Championship on November 19th. This was Atholton Raider Volleyball s first state win in 27 years. This is a huge win and we are proud of them. Divya Singh has been selected by Music for All to be a member of the Bands of America Honor Band in the 2017 Tournament of Roses Parade. She was selected from among hundreds of applicants across the nation for membership in this prestigious national honor band. Congratulations, Divya! Our Athletic Boosters will be selling Christmas trees as a fundraiser this weekend, December 3 rd and 4 th from 10:00am - 5:00pm. Trees will be located in the AHS parking lot between the tennis courts and the baseball field. Please consider supporting their efforts. We hope you can join us for our Winter Concerts. Our talented students have been working hard and we look forward to seeing them perform. The Choir Concert is December 6 th, Band Concert on December 7 th, and the Orchestra Concert is December 8 th at 7:00pm December 5-11 marks the 3 rd annual HCPSS Hour of Code and Computer Science Education Week and once again AHS will be participating. The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. Students will be scheduled through their math classes to participate in this activity and will also be able to visit the media center before and after school for additional instruction. The Council of Elders will celebrate the academic excellence for 42 of our 9 th grade students for their success last year in their Math and Language Arts courses. The ceremony will be held at Hammond High on Monday, December 5 th at 6:30pm. Congratulations to our students. Next week our students will be invited to participate in school-wide Student Voice Conversations. Students will be given passes during 3 rd period and will have an opportunity to share their thoughts while they dialogue on ways to make Atholton the most inclusive school possible. Wilde Lake Middle School (10481 Cross Fox Lane in Columbia) is hosting two open houses to celebrate the closing of its old building and the opening of its new. The public is invited to say "goodbye" to the original location on December 12, 2016 from 4:00-6:00 pm. At this time, you will get to explore the building and go down memory lane.
On January 8th, 2017, we invite the public to say "hello" to the new location, also known as, Maryland's first net zero school. The celebration will begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1:00 pm followed by an open house until 4:00 pm. The open house will include guided tours of the most energy conscious and efficient school in the State. PREVIOUSLY SHARED INFORMATION: Atholton Dance Concert The winter dance concert is just around the corner. There will be performances on Thursday, Dec 15 th and Saturday, Dec 17 th at 7pm. Tickets are $8.00 and will be on sale during all lunch shifts that week as well as at the door. Please come out and support the Atholton dancers! Please bring a non-perishable food item when you come to the concert. Labeled boxes will be in the auditorium lobby area. AHS Fine Arts T-Shirt There is finally a t-shirt to unite all of the artists and art supporters of the Atholton community. T-shirts are $15. Each purchase helps the dance companies who are raising money to perform in Disney World and the Give the Kids the World Village in Orlando, Florida. Order forms are available in the dance studio, front office or you can email Mrs. Haffey at heather_haffey@hcpss.org for an electronic copy of the form. Forms can be turned in directly to Mrs. Haffey or placed in her mailbox in the front office. Diversity Committee In light of the recent racially charged post, the PTSA has formed a new Diversity Committee. Jamie Swain has graciously offered to chair this committee. We will strive to help our students, staff and school community understand the impact of derogatory and racists words, actions and ideas. The cost is $365 and a portion is donated back to the PTSA. You have classroom time and then 3 hours of driving with an instructor.
