6 Before and After School Supervision In order to ensure the safety of your children, students should not be arriving at school before 8:30 a.m. and should be on their way home no later than 3:35 p.m. as there are no supervisors outside before and after these times. Gish Elementary & Junior High School St. Albert 75 Akins Drive Phone:(780) SCHOOL ZONE DRIVING, PARKING AND WALKING REMINDERS: School zone restrictions are in effect from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm (16:00 h), Monday to Friday, when school is in session. Please obey all instructions given by staff and Parent Parking Patrol. They are there to keep your students safe. DRIVING: Please drive with extreme caution, as students often don t watch for vehicles. The speed limit in the school zone is 30 km/h Private vehicles may only enter the parking lot for morning drop-off. ONLY BUSSES are allowed in the parking lot for end-of-day pickup. Only right turns are allowed when exiting the parking lot ($175 fine for turning left). U-Turns are not allowed in the school zone. Turning on private driveways is considered trespassing, unless you have permission from the homeowners. Dropping students without driving through the parking lot must follow the parking rules of the neighbourhood. Do not let students out in the middle of the road other drivers will not expect people on foot in the middle of the road. PARKING (FINES START AT $60) Please obey all parking signs. Parking is not allowed directly in front of the school, for the entire length of the school. Parking is not allowed in the crosswalk (past the white line on the road). Parking is not allowed in front of the fire hydrant. Cars cannot block driveways must be 5 feet from a driveway, 15 feet from a street corner, 15 feet from a fire hydrant. WALKING Please cross at marked crosswalks only. Jay walking teaches students unsafe practices.

7 Dear Students and Families, Throughout the next few months, Elmer S. Gish school will be participating in a fundraiser for the Stollery Children s Hospital Foundation. This fundraiser, called Ava s Answer for Cancer will consist of ongoing activities and events throughout the year. Ava is a Grade 7 student at our school who was diagnosed with Osterosarcoma, a type of bone cancer last year and has just recently received her last chemotherapy treatment. Please visit the link posted below in order to find out more about Ava s story, and where the money raised will be going. You can also find a donate now option if you would like to make an immediate donation! This year our fundraising goal is $10,000! On March 15th, 2018, we will be hosting a schoolwide event to celebrate all of the student s efforts. We wanted to provide you with an outline of the different fundraising ideas we hope to host. November: We are combining Movember fundraising with Ava s Answer for Cancer this year. In the past, this event consisted of a bake sale and Rock the Stache (a musical event). We will also be selling wristbands to kick off our fundraiser! December: For the Junior High Sock Hop Dance, we would like to sell something at the concession. January: We will be having a yoga night, and an in-school event where students will tape a teacher to the wall. February: Host a 50/50 raffle at the Music Concert. We will also be having an Art Show with all sales going towards Ava s Answer for Cancer. Attached to this document you will find a donation tracker. 8 Dear Gish Community, Movember has come and gone for another year, and I must say this year was the most memorable. This past month we saw the Gish community rally around one of its students to help with the year long fundraising campaign, "Ava's Answer for Cancer". The Gents of Gish were happy to put on the largest bake sale in Elmer S. Gish history, raising $2,250! To wrap up Movember, with the help of Mr. Buryn we hosted the 2nd Annual Rock the Stache for Ava! Grade's 4-9 students squeezed into the gym to watch 13 student-led air bands rock the stage! It was an incredible sight seeing so many of our students involved in the event! Rock the Stache raised a further $1,100 for Ava's Answer for Cancer. Movember has become a meaningful month here at our school and each year we are able to raise a significant amount of money for cancer awareness. This year was no different, in fact, it was our best year yet! A heart felt thank you to all of you for your help! 9 Please make sure you are sending your children to school with the proper clothing for the winter season! Outdoor recesses will continue until the temperature reaches -22. Below are some items that you should be sending with your child. toque mittens gloves scarf snow pants winter coat socks winter boots Pizza Friday Just a reminder that pizza can be purchased Friday mornings in the front foyer. Pizza slices are $4 each and the choices are cheese, pepperoni, hawaiian, or meatlovers. Please make sure to send cutlery to school with your child if they require it for their snack or lunch.
