CLEANSE GUIDE Cultivating a perfectly healthy lifestyle is difficult at the even the best of times in today s world. Life is a series of constant change and learning to ebb and flow along with this change is the key to finding balance. If you are feeling disconnected from this notion or unable to find your groove with healthy lifestyle practices, a cleanse is a great tool to help kickstart new habits and reset your system. Cleansing is one of the best ways to regain clarity of mind and body. When we flood our bodies with nutrients, we come alive! In this way, cleansing gives us the opportunity to revive our energy as well as pause and gain insight into ourselves. During a cleanse, your systems of digestion and elimination (colon, liver, kidneys, lungs and skin) are given a chance to take a break and focus on self-healing. In practice, I have seen profound improvements of many ailments in patients through cleansing, especially for any inflammatory, digestive or malabsorptive conditions. Please check in with your body whilst you are on a cleanse. Cleansing affects each person differently, but if you notice any health challenges surfacing (rashes, vomiting, night sweats, dizziness), this might be a sign that you need additional support and may need to focus on your health more intensively with a health practitioner. Do take time to prepare for your cleanse and ease out of it after. A cleanse can be a big shock to anyone s system if not done properly. I have explained how to prepare in the pages to follow. I hope that you find this guide insightful and wish you all the best on your journey to feeling the best version of yourself. Yours in health, Cara Cara van Heyningen our in-house Nutritionist
At KPJK, we don t believe that juicing and cleansing should be limited to yogi s and health gurus. We all hustle in our own way and we could all do with the super boost of nutrients that KPJK s juices have to offer. Our cleanses bring you 6 bottles of goodness per day for the number of days that you choose. The Lowdown on Cleansing Cleansing is a great means to increase energy, kickstart weight loss, reduce inflammation, relieve bloating, improve sleep, enhance clarity of mind and combat food cravings. A few things to note before you cleanse: 1. Cleansing is not a quick-fix: there is no such thing in the nutrition world unfortunately. Improving day-to-day lifestyle habits are the tell-tale way to seeing lasting results. Please view your cleanse as a way to initiate positive changes for long-term benefits. Use this time to conquer cravings, identifying possible food sensitivities and establishing new habits. 2. Cleansing is not for everyone: we do not recommend cleansing if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or under 16 years of age. If you have a severe medical condition, are on prescription medication, or have any doubts about cleansing being suitable for you, we strongly advise that you check with your doctor. 3. Cleansing is not the only way to benefit from juice: Any time you drink our juice - jampacked with raw nutrients, flavor and functionality, you are giving yourself permission to feel good. You should be feeling this way every day! Replacing your mid-morning coffee or mid-afternoon snack with a juice is a super sustainable way to integrate juicing into your daily life.
Before & After Your Cleanse It is important to ease into and out of your cleanse for at least 2 days pre- and post-cleanse. There are two main reasons for this: firstly, to make your cleanse easier (going from a weekend of excess straight into a cleanse is painful. We don t want you to hurt). Secondly, pre-cleansing allows you to make the most of your cleanse by the time you start cleansing, your body is already cleaner and working more sufficiently, thus able to optimize on this time of self-healing. DO: Eat and drink plenty of vegetables (preferably raw and organic), as well as whole grains, nuts, seeds, healthy fats and sustainable fish and poultry (if applicable to you). AVOID: Alcohol, refined sugar, fried and processed foods, as well as large amounts of red meat, wheat and dairy. Cutting down on caffeine and tobacco as much as possible before and after can also greatly enhance the benefits of your cleanse. The more attention you devote to transitioning yourself into and out of your cleanse, the better you will feel, and the deeper and longer-lasting your cleanse s positive effects will be.
During Your Cleanse Drinking the juices - Keep them KOLD. Our juices and nut milks are raw, unpasteurized and contain no preservatives. Your juices must always remain cold to the touch. You will receive a kooler bag that holds up to 6 juices with an ice pack that you can re-freeze. Use this bag as your daily travel kit while cleansing. - Drink your juices in the order listed in your cleanse program. They have been selected in a specific order as best to support the natural digestive rhythms of the body. As always, however, listen to your body and do what feels right for you. - You don t have to finish all your juice. We know, it can be a lot to consume in one sitting! If you prefer to sip on your juices throughout the day, especially the richer nut milks, that s absolutely fine. If you can t get through all the juices in one day that is fine too, but do not restrict yourself. They are there to nourish your cells and flush your body of toxins. Drink loads of water - Don t forget to drink water! Staying hydrated whilst on a cleanse is super important. Aim to drink water before each of your juices. Wait about 30 minutes between drinking water and juice for optimal nutrient absorption. The Coffee Saga - Eliminating coffee during a cleanse is advisable for two reasons: firstly, it amplifies liver detoxification, and secondly, it prevents the caffeine jitters that a liquid diet can cause. - If you cannot face the day without your morning cuppa Joe, then limit to one cup and have this by 11am latest to ensure a good night s sleep. - Herbal tea, however, is strongly recommended, especially if it is chilly outside or your find yourself in a heavily air-conditioned environment all day. Cleansing can cause your inner thermometer to drop and it s important to keep yourself warm. An extra layer of clothing can do the trick too. Exercise - Keep moving while you cleanse for sure, but take it easy. Opt to replace any high-intensity training with a gentle yoga class, a power walk or a swim.
Taking time out - Schedule your cleanse at a time when you are able to listen to your body s needs and follow them accordingly. This does not mean that you will be bed-ridden for the duration of your cleanse, especially if you prepare properly and ease into it, but do not pick a very stressful time to do a cleanse. - Make time to get extra sleep during your cleanse. The body heals while you sleep. Hunger pangs - Most people who cleanse with us find that they don t actually feel as hungry as expected. What one does miss is chewing! The Chia Water supplied each day contains seeds that you can chew to help alleviate this desire. - However, if you feel really hungry, eat something. This is not a test of willpower, listen to your body and do what feels right for you. Choose something light like raw veggies, a simple veggie soup or a handful of raw nuts or seeds.
Staying regular - You may not be as regular as usual during your cleanse and this is okay, but it is important to still be getting enough fibre and have daily bowel movements as this optimizes the benefits of your cleanse. - The Chia Water that you receive contains both soluble and insoluble fibre to help keep you regular. If you feel you need more fibre than this then add 2-3 tablespoons of ground flax or chia seeds into a glass or two of water per day and drink. Detox support - Note to self: you WILL experience some detox symptoms on the first or second day, severity depending on how well you have eased into your cleanse. Symptoms include headaches, dry mouth, white tongue, fatigue and heightened emotional sensitivity. - Your skin is the largest organ of detoxification, so dry brushing is a great way to brush away dead skin cells and stimulate blood circulation, speeding up the elimination of toxins. Massage works in a similar way so treat yourself to one of those if you can. - The lungs are also an organ of elimination, so going for a stroll outdoors and practicing deep breathing exercises can also help to speed up detoxification. - You may experience an emotional detox where old feelings surface. This is a very normal physiological process. Honour yourself during your cleanse and allow your body to let go of both physical and emotional debris.
