PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS... 2 ISSUE 1 VOLUME 1 2011 MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR ONE DAY SEMINARS...3 I.S.R.T. ISRT MISSION: TO ADVANCE THE MEDICAL IMAGING AND RADIATION QUIZ BOWL... 4 LEGISLATIVE UPDATE... 5 THERAPY PROFESSION AND ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF PATIENT CARE. Indiana Society of Radiologic Technologists focus The ISRT membership numbers have continued to decrease. Word of mouth is the best advertising. Encourage fellow co-workers to join the ISRT and help promote our profession. - Debby LeMay at the 2011 Annual Conference Business Meeting State of the Society Presented at the 2011 Annual Conference Business Meeting by 2010-2011 ISRT President Deborah LeMay The ISRT was represented well at RT in DC. Steve Cohen, Pat Cohen Lynn Howley, Donna Long, Kellie Hart and John Hughey walked the walk and talked the talk on Capitol Hill to help inform the Senators and Congressmen on why they should support the Care Bill. If you need any information about the Care Bill and to see if your Senator or Congressman is sponsor or cosponsor see Steve Cohen, he has a wealth of information on this topic! The ISRT accepted an April 2012 bid from Evansville to hold a one day educational seminar. This continues the ISRT s commitment to offer one day educational programs throughout the state to help keep in touch with the membership. If you want further information about this seminar, please refer to the Upcoming Events section of the website or contact Joy Cook. The ISRT has also accepted a February 2012 bid from Indianapolis to host a Cardiovascular one day seminar. If you want further information about this seminar, please refer to the Upcoming Events section of the website or contact Pat Cohen. In June Debra Dillman, Ashley Smith and I traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico to attend the ASRT 2011 House of Delegates Meeting. It was amazing to see the inner workings of the ASRT. Also, our own Donna Long was installed as President Elect of the ASRT for the 2011-2012 year. The ISRT membership numbers have continued to decrease. Word of mouth is the best advertising. Encourage fellow co-workers to join the ISRT and help promote our profession. The ISRT new website went live in November 2010. The website offers membership applications and conference registration online and from the response of the membership this was a positive move. We are continually making updates and changes to make the web searching experience better for our members. Please feel free to provide input by contacting us at www.isort.org.

Thanks to all of you for coming to the conference this year. I m especially grateful for your confidence in me. It s an honor to represent you. If someone had asked me four years ago if I would be standing here today, I would have had to say no way. I could not imagine it. I have been a card carrying ISRT member since 1983. Four years ago Kelly Wiedner Hardin, the President of the ISRT at that time, asked me if I wanted to be on a committee and I said yes. I had done nothing for the ISRT until that time I m sad to say. One of the most meaningful experiences that I ve had through the ISRT is going to the RT in DC event in Washington. That is the ASRT s annual advocacy event. That is about what else but the CARE Bill! If you ever want to go to this event let us know. I highly recommend going. ISRT Presidential Address It is an awesome experience. One of our most urgent initiatives is passage of the CARE Bill. Indiana is fortunate enough to have good licensing laws, but there are eight states including Washington, DC that have no type of licensing! So please contact your congressman and ask him to support and co sponsor this very important bill. With that being said, getting involved is something we all need to do. Your voice matters, your work matters. And we depend upon you, the member, to help keep the ISRT running. So I encourage you to volunteer whether you serve on a committee, run for an office, host a one day seminar or a host a thee day conference. It is still not too late to be on a committee. Or if you ever thought about running for an office, next year could be your year! And if there are educators here today, I ask that you talk with your students about being a member of the ISRT. Students are very important to this society. I believe that they are the future of the ISRT and our profession. This past Wednesday evening, I brought up the Presented at the 2011 Annual Conference Business Meeting by 2011-2012 ISRT President Steve Cohen proposal of starting a student committee for the ISRT. Getting the students involved in board activities, having them act as liaisons between their programs and the ISRT, attending board meetings, giving them tasks and getting their ideas and perspectives on different issues. I already have the names of seven students who want to be on a committee. And hopefully, once they graduate and become RT s, they will continue on with the ISRT and will eventually choose to be on another committee or run for an office. Active membership is the key. Part of my goal for the coming year will be to increase our membership. The ISRT has had a decline in membership over the last several years. In 2009 we had approximately 710 members. Currently, we have 571 members. I plan on working to get students more involved. So, I challenge the educators to speak with your students and impress upon them the importance of being a member of the ISRT. Remember the ISRT is here for you, the RT and the student. 2012 ANNUAL CONFERENCE - The ISRT Needs Your Help! ISRT President Steve Cohen is currently looking for an individual or group to host the 2012 Annual Conference. Interested individuals should contact Steve Cohen at s.cohen1@comcast.net. Important Membership Renewal Information All 2011 ISRT memberships will expire on January 31, 2012. Renewing your membership is easier than ever with online membership payment and processing at www.isort.org. Not comfortable with paying online? You can print a copy of the membership application/renewal form from the ISRT website and submit with a check or money order via mail. Electronic membership renewal reminders will be sent to ISRT members with a valid email address on file in December 2011. Paper reminders will be sent to all members without an email address on file in January 2012. Memberships that have not been renewed by April 1, 2012 will become inactive. Please contact the Executive Secretary at isort@comcast.net if you have any questions regarding the status of your membership.

Mark Your Calendar: 2012 ISRT Educational Opportunities INDIANAPOLIS ONE DAY SEMINAR IN FEBRUARY The ISRT is sponsoring a one day educational program at St. Francis Hospital-South Campus on Saturday, February 18, 2012 in Indianapolis. In recognition of February being Heart Health Month, the program will focus on cardiovascular and vascular interventional imaging. Lecture descriptions, registration information, and directions will be available on the ISRT website in the near future. Have questions? Contact Seminar Chairman, Patricia Cohen at cohenpkj@yahoo.com or phone 317-250-1455. EVANSVILLE ONE DAY SEMINAR IN APRIL The ISRT is currently planning a one day educational program at the St. Mary s Medical Center Amphitheatre in Evansville on Saturday, April 14, 2012. Details of the seminar including speakers, lecture topics, and registration information will be available on the ISRT website in 2012. Kellie Cranfill Hart Honored at Annual Conference Kellie Cranfill Hart, MSRS, RT(R)(BD) was awarded the ISRT s highest honor during the 2011 Annual Conference, Life Membership. Kellie, a member of the ISRT since she was a student, has been a very active member of the Society. Kellie has not only served on numerous committees but has also shown leadership as a member the Board of Directors in multiple positions. Kellie is a radiography educator at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. Additionally, Kellie was awarded First Place in the 2011 ISRT Scientific Exhibit Competition, Technologist Category with her poster titled Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. Congratulations Kellie on all your achievements!

Scenes from the 2011 Annual Conference 4TH ANNUAL QUIZ BOWL A HUGE SUCCESS It gets bigger and better every year! Sixteen teams traveled from across Indiana to competed in the fourth annual ISRT Quiz Bowl at the 2011 Annual Conference. Jane Patton, Quiz Bowl Coordinator, is very proud of the success and growth of the event over the past several years. Congratulations to all the students and coaches who participated in the Quiz Bowl. Winners of the 2011 Quiz Bowl are Double Exposures from Indiana University South Bend. Left to right, Erika Truex, team coach Heidi Walker, Jennifer Ashley, Jason Kukla, and Mardell Baker.

This section will keep you up to date on what is happening with legislation that affects all of us, whether in Indiana or across the country. As of October 2011, there has been no movement with the CARE Bill. We so far, have only two US House of Representatives who are present cosponsors of this bill. They are Congressman Dan Burton and Congressman Andre Carson. We need your help. Please contact the Congressman in your district and ask him to please support and co-sponsor this very important bill! Not sure how to contact your representative? Just go to the ASRT eadvocacy for You site: http:// capwiz.com/asrt/home/ and click on the Take Action button. Enter your zip code to generate who you need to contact. Also, we will be going to RT in DC again next year. The dates for this great event are March 25th-27th. If you would like to attend contact me at s.cohen1@comcast.net Legislative Update Follow ISRT Legislative Liaison Steve Cohen s Legislative Updates online at www.isort.org And speaking of Indiana, the RA s (Radiologist Assistant) are trying to get a bill passed in Indiana. This bill, once passed, will reduce supervision levels that RA s must currently meet for their services to be paid by Medicare and set a reimbursement level for RA services at 85% of the physician fee schedule rate. This bill was introduced in the United States House of Representatives on September 22, 2011. You can contact your Indiana Congressman about this issue as well. The introduction of the RA bill in the US House was a collaboration of the ASRT, ARRT and the American College of Radiology. If you have ANY questions about the CARE bill or the RA bill, just send me an e-mail (s.cohen1@comcast.net) and I will get back with you!! Calling all RT s & Students to RT in DC Join the ISRT Legislative team as they travel to Washington D.C. to lobby for passage of the C.A.R.E bill on Capitol Hill March 25-27, 2012. The ISRT has allocated funds to help defer travel costs for technologists and students from Indiana to attend this very important national event. If you are interested in attending RT in DC in 2012 please contact Steve Cohen now for more information. s.cohen1@comcast.net More Annual Conference Awards Above - Joy Cook received the ISRT Outstanding Technologist Award from Debby LeMay.
