Help them to find, build and use sober support networks
The Psychology of Addiction Participants will learn the contributions that contemporary psychology and neurobiology are making to the understanding of substance seeking, use and addiction. Although the media has often overemphasized a concept of the high jacked brain of an addict, psychological theory and practice offers a wealth of evidenced informed understanding that can improve clinicians work with substance dependent people. A second common misunderstanding is that a psychology only model alone is sufficient to understand and treat addictive behaviors. The BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL model offers the integrative underpinning of collaboration among disciplines and various treatment approaches. Addiction is best understood as a chronic disorders with acute phases of relapse and rehabilitation. During each phase of a person s struggles with addiction different models of intervention may be appropriate. Short-term inpatient stays have often been overemphasized for clinical and financial reasons. Unfortunately, there has been woefully inadequate attention of the need for intensive longerterm inpatient and outpatient treatment and sober supports. Such support involves a multi-faceted model of individual, group and family work and community assists. In addition, many people seeking recovery find 12 step support fellowships indispensible to establishing and maintaining sobriety and personal growth. Several important principles drawn from long-term, evidence based follow-up studies provide guidance for newer care models and identify factors that contribute to effective clinical outcomes. First, it has been found that the more the client does in the way of treatment, especially in their initial attempts, the better the outcome. Second, the longer they sustain their treatment and support efforts, the better the outcome. In addition, because the incidence and prevalence of coexisting mental and physical disorders is very high in the addicted population in America, the best treatment models use integrative interdisciplinary care. Psychological treatment has a vital role to play in the BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL model. The presentation will include: A historical perspective on the models and the characteristics of assessment and treatment that have marked the evolution of the fields of Alcoholism, Drug Abuse and Mental Health Treatment will be discussed. The theoretical underpinnings, separate and not equal status, turf battles, and emergent integrative models of the field will be discussed. Major psychological models of addiction will be presented, including the characteristics of neurobiology and psychological models. As part of the psychological model, core vulnerabilities and favored defenses will be explored. The question of whether addiction is a mental illness will be addressed. Ways of combining passionate support and treatment challenges will be explored. Practical principles of rehabilitation will also be identified and discussed. The central role of family treatment will also be discussed, including ways to engage families in crisis and offer immediate support, stopping the blame/guilt cycle, and addressing family recovery patterns and family relapse patterns.
