19th Annual Awards and Benefit Gala Creating Independence Supporting Literacy Saturday, October 18, 2014 The Hilton Memphis

Benefiting the Arc Mid-South The 2014 Arc Gala The 2014 Arc Gala will bring together community leaders, Arc members, volunteers and friends to celebrate with live entertainment, silent and live auctions, cocktail reception and more. Our celebration will include more than 300 guests for an evening of fun that will raise dollars for The Arc Mid-South's s for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. You will be inspired by stories of lives touched by The Arc. This is a wonderful sponsorship opportunity to join with other leading corporations and organizations to truly make this a good life for thousands of individuals and families served by The Arc. Saturday, October 18, 2014 The Hilton Memphis 6:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. Sponsorship of the 2014 Arc Annual Fund A Need Campaign has many benefits: Aligning your company and your name to the crucial cause of improving the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families Boosting your company's reputation in the community Increasing positive name recognition and brand awareness Fostering relationships with key current and emerging community leaders Uniting corporate teams behind a common purpose and exposing them to new ideas, viewpoints and social issues Here's what guests said about past Arc Galas: "The Arc Gala is a great opportunity to interact with other corporate and community leaders." "Very fun. The variety of entertainment is great..." "Our employees who attended thanked us for the opportunity to be involved in a very special evening and get behind a cause that is so important in helping children with Autism, Asperger's, Down syndrome and other disabilities. "The whole evening was a testament to walking the walk."

Benefiting The Arc Mid-South Imagine A World Without Illiteracy... Proceeds from gala sponsorships support many crucial s for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families including literacy s. At one time, literacy was defined simply as the ability to read. Today, as information and technology drive American society, that definition has been broadened. The Workforce Investment Act of 1998 defines literacy as the ability to read, write and speak English, compute and solve problems at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job, in the family of the individual, and in society. Very few adults who have attended school in the United States cannot read at all. However, between 21 and 23 percent of the U.S. population function at literacy Level 1, and another 25 to 28 percent function at Level 2, as defined by the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL). You do not hear a lot about illiteracy today, even though it remains an important challenge to our society. Furthermore, some people fall into a far higher risk of illiteracy: people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. More than 50% of our students are unable to read and almost all of our students have low to moderate literacy. Low literacy is strongly related to unemployment. More than 20% of adults read at or below a fifth grade level far below the level needed to earn a living wage. Of this twenty percent, 87% of those adults have a disability. 70% of people with the lowest literacy skills have no full or part time job. 43% of people with the lowest literacy skills live in poverty. Illiteracy and crime are closely related. The Department of Justice states, "The link between academic failure and delinquency, violence, and crime is welded to reading failure." Over 70% of inmates in America's prisons cannot read above a fourth grade level. You can help when you support The Arc's Creating Independence Supporting Literacy Initiative, the focus of the 2014 Arc Gala. This multi-pronged effort reaches out to students with disabilities, adults with disabilities, parents, professionals and disability organizations. The Arc Mid-South is taking action to make life better for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. And we invite you to join us in Creating Independence and Supporting Literacy. The Arc Mid-South is a grassroots advocacy organization serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. Our mission is to empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to achieve their full potential in short, to achieve better lives. Thanks to our supporters... The Arc Mid-South assisted over 1,350 people with services, education and advocacy last year In addition, people participated more than 5,000 times in workshops, family activities, classes and advocacy s About 70% of those served by The Arc were from multicultural communities and almost 100% were from households at or below federal poverty guidelines. As a sponsor, donor and Gala attendee, you will make the world a better place for people with disabilities and their families by answering the call to Creating Independence and Supporting Literacy. Thank you.
