EMERGING LEADERS DIALOGUES INITIATIVES THE EMERGING LEADERS FOR SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM In June 2017, Emerging Leaders Dialogues Canada, McGill University s Institute for the Study of International Development (ISID), and Vancouver Island University (VIU) organized the first, Emerging Leaders for Sustainable Community Development (ELSCD) program, which promotes relationship building and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-indigenous communities through leadership collaboration and development. The program themes were Ethics and Good Governance; Inclusiveness, Diversity and Community Engagement; Collaborative Leadership and, Sustainability. Over 6 days, this program brought together 38 Canadian and American emerging leaders for three days of module work and three days of experiential visits to business enterprises, unions, government departments and civil society organizations, in both Indigenous and non-indigenous communities. These on-site visits provided an opportunity to discuss real challenges and strategies with community leaders. Interacting with such a diverse mix of organizations exposed the participants to a range of issues from multiple perspectives, and provided an opportunity to look beyond the scope of their regular context. The insights gained from the modules and meetings promoted understanding and connection and informed the project work of the groups. ELD CANADA TAKES PRIDE IN CELEBRATING THE SUCCESS OF OUR ALUMNI ELD Canada s Alumni Network is globally connected and are active as speakers, mentors and patrons to ELD Canada programs. Our alumni proactively connect with emerging leaders and harness their growing capacity through value added initiatives. We utilize social media platforms to offer modernized channels of Alumni connectivity and peer engagement, which then feeds directly into our programming. We would like to highlight and congratulate the achievements of the following leaders and take pleasure in knowing that our programs have had an impact on their leadership development: Sharlene Linette Cartwright-Robinson JP, a CCELD 2011 alum became Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands in December 2016. She is the territory s first female premier and leader of the People s Democratic Movement. Ben Almond, Regional Managing Director & SVP, Canada, CH2M, a CCELD 2011 alum received recognition for his outstanding contribution to his organization by being recognized as one of Canada s Top 40 Leaders under 40. Tasha Brooks, an alum of ELSCD 2017, accepted a position as the Education Navigator at Vancouver Island University - Cowichan campus, to support students as they journey through post-secondary education. ELSCD 2017 TESTIMONIALS Participating in the ELSCD program was an experience that shifted my worldview and understanding in ways that have improved my personal and professional work and relations. This course challenged normative approaches to indigenous and non-indigenous ways of reconciliation, leadership, and community development; and offered a space where open dialogue could happen in order to shed light on the complexities of the challenges we face as a society and people. One of the greatest take aways from this program were the friendships and connections made through the groups shared experiences. My network has grown, and I believe is stronger for it! My understanding of reconciliation shifted dramatically over the course of the week. I ve spent the last decade of my life working on reconciliation programming and projects in high conflict areas around the world. I m familiar with dozens of definitions and understanding of the concept from a variety of cultural perspectives. But the week with ELSCD located my understanding of reconciliation in something more tactile. Reconciliation is so abstract so much of the time, what I realized this week was that we build relationships by building something together. That something can be anything - a water treatment plant, a flood protection system, a sense of community and belonging - or whatever other shared needs exist. We focus so much of our time on trying to rebuild relationship without anything to build them around. If we can build something together that addresses a shared need and shared opportunity, the relationship is a more natural and sustainable and creates opportunities to continue to come together, understand differences, and build respect.
