Reproductive Medicine and Gynecological Endocrinology (RME) General Information
Our main goal is to provide care of the highest standard. Our work is based on the latest research evidence and we are guided by strict ethical guidelines. Word of welcome We welcome you to the Institute of Reproductive Medicine and Gynecological Endocrinology (RME) of the University Hospital Basel. We hope that this brochure will help you to learn about us and our spectrum of work. You are at the center of our daily commitment. You can expect individual care from us, as well as treatment to the highest medical standards. If you have any questions, we are always happy to assist you. Prof. Christian De Geyter Medical director Reproductive Medicine and Gynecological Endocrinology 1
Our services Treatment of infertility The RME offers comprehensive and individual fertility treatments. In the first step, both partners are carefully examined for possible underlying causes. Depending on the diagnosis, an attempt is made to treat the underlying cause. If no clear cause of infertility can be identified (un explained infertility), empiric treatment can be offered. The therapy is tailored to the individual needs of the couple. In our reproductive biology laboratory the various methods of assisted repro duction (IVF, ICSI, IUI) are available. Our laboratories are ISO accredited and equipped with high quality technology (cleanroom, Time Lapse technology). Andrology In our accredited andrology laboratory semen analyses are performed to assess male factor fertility, according to the latest quality standards of the WHO (World Health Organization). One centerpiece of our diagnostic workup is the analysis of DNA damage to sperm (DNA fragmentation). Operative treatments We offer the full spectrum of diagnostic and operative procedures by hysteroscopy and laparoscopy. Through these microsurgical techniques, diseases such as endometriosis, fibroids and disorders affecting the fallopian tubes can be effectively treated. Fertility preservation Another focus of our clinic is fertility preservation. This may include the freezing of eggs and sperm before planned chemotherapy, radiation or surgery, which may decrease fertility. We offer advice to women and men in this regard. Interdisciplinary cooperation A special advantage of treatment at the University Hospital Basel is the close cooperation with specialists from other disciplines such as urology, oncology, sexual medicine and human genetics. Endocrinology In the field of gynecological endocrinology, we offer hormone analyses in order to detect current hormonal disturbances at an early stage, to prevent impairments of future fertility (for example: disorders of thyroid function, polycystic ovarian syndrome and hyperprolactinemia). Furthermore, we investigate and treat problems with contraception, menstrual cycle irregularities and menopausal disorders. 2
