Historical Sketch On March 29, 1882, the Connecticut state legislature officially chartered the Knights of Columbus, a fraternal benefit society founded by Father Michael J. McGivney with a group of parishioners in the basement of St. Mary s Church in New Haven, Connecticut. One hundred twenty-five years later, the Knights of Columbus has grown to the largest lay Catholic organization in the world with more than 1.7 million members (kofc.org, accessed April 26, 2012). The Knights of Columbus Council 1207 was established in Lake Charles in 1907. Scope and Content The collection contains twenty-six boxes of materials including records of the group s activities from minutes of meetings beginning in 1914 to news releases up to 1999. 2
