Pres. George W. Hazzard President George W. Hazzard Papers RG 020_01_11_00 ABSTRACT: These are the papers of George W. Hazzard, 11th president of WPI, serving from 1969-1978, and the president during implementation of the WPI Plan. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: George W. Hazzard was born in Cortland, New York in 1915. He received his B.S. and M.S. from St. Lawrence University in Physics and Mathematics, and his Ph.D. from Cornell University in Experimental Physics and Physical Chemistry in 1947. Dr. Hazzard taught at St. Lawrence University until 1954. From 1954 to 1965 he worked at the General Electric Research Laboratory as University Representative and Research Personnel Section Manager. In 1965, he became Associate Provost and later Vice Chancellor of professional schools and research at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He married Jean Fawcett in 1940, and they had three children. During his presidency at WPI, Dr. Hazzard promoted the idea of the technological humanist, the engineer who is also a humanist. In 1970, under his presidency, the WPI faculty approved the WPI Plan, under which students planned their programs of study with their faculty advisers, and had to complete two projects relating their major field of study to a social need. They were also required to complete a sufficiency equivalent to a minor in the humanities. Dr. Hazzard served as a member of the state Board of Regents, as a trustee of WPI's George I. Alden Trust, and as an honorary trustee of the Medical Center of Central Massachusetts. He was also a trustee of Worcester Academy and St. Lawrence University. He was named in 1980 by Gov. Edward J. King to a state commission on reorganization of public higher education, and he and John F. Collins, former mayor of Boston, drafted the report that charted the wide-ranging revamping of the state's college system. Note: some of the above information is taken from published obituaries for Dr. Hazzard. SCOPE AND CONTENT: Most of the collection is from Dr. Hazzard's presidency of WPI, 1969-1978. Much of it is made up of the President's Committe minutes and reports to the trustees. The correspondence in this collection is primarily memoranda to the WPI community. More correspondence may be found in the President's Planning Group records, which are the records and related materials of the faculty committee charged with creating and implementing the WPI Plan. Also in this collection are articles and addresses by President Hazzard and articles by others about WPI and the Plan. The last part of this collection contains research President Hazzard did, most during his retirement, on the history of private engineering colleges. There are also two drop-front boxes containing congratulatory citations on President Hazzard's inauguration. This collection is organized by series: Series I: Biographical information and material related to President Hazzard's inauguration. Series II: Correspondence Series III: President's Committee (later President's Advisory Committee) Agendas and Minutes Series IV: Reports of the President to the Trustees Series V: Press releases, news articles, other reports, search committee for new president Series VI: Articles and Addresses by President Hazzard Series VII: Articles and papers about WPI and the Plan by others Page 1
