Such exercises usually involve some form of jumping, but other modes of exercise exist. This course is designed to teach the high school coach or teacher how plyometrics work, why it is used, and how to integrate it into a complete training program. When sound training principles are used, plyometrics offers the mechanism by which an athlete can start quicker, change direction more rapidly, accelerate faster, and improve overall speed. Note: Students are required to purchase the textbook separately. Participants will discover how male and female athletes can improve quickness, speed, and jumping ability while gaining greater coordination, body control, and balance. This course includes numerous illustrated plyometric exercises and a video which uses slow motion, freeze frame, and graphics to demonstrate low, moderate, and high intensity exercises. Course assignments encourage participants to integrate specific national standards for physical education. Objectives for each lesson are modeled around standards-based learning as identified by the National Association for Sports and Physical Education (NASPE). Evidence of learning is tied directly to stated objectives and is accessed via analysis and application papers, training programs, testing programs, reflective evaluations and peer learning. Standards-Based Instruction Standards are an enduring commitment, not a passing fancy. -California State Board of Education National Association for Sports and Physical Education (NASPE) (www.aahperd.org/naspe) Assignments contained in this course are closely aligned to National Content Standards in Physical Education for grades kindergarten through 12 th grade. The following content standards listed by NASPE are addressed throughout this course. Specific standards are identified with various assignments presented in the course binder. NASPE appointed the Outcomes Committee to answer the question, What should students know and be able to do? The Outcomes Project culminated in the development of a definition of the physically educated person. This definition included five major focus areas: Participant has learned skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities Participant is physically fit Participant does participate regularly in physical activity Participant knows the implications of and the benefits from involvement in physical activities Participant values physical activity and its contribution to a healthful lifestyle HPT 904- - Plyometric Training for Sports Page 1 of 6

From these five major focus areas, the following seven standards were developed for a physically educated student. Participants are asked to apply these standards in their teaching practices and demonstrate them within their coursework. Movement Forms o Demonstrates competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement forms. Movement Concepts o Applies movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills. Physical Activity o Exhibits a physically active lifestyle. Physical Fitness o Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. Responsible Behavior o Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings. Respect for Others o Demonstrates understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings. Understanding Challenge o Understands that physical activity provides opportunity for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction. Primary Learning Outcomes After completing this course, participants will be able to: Identify and integrate standards into many aspects of their teaching and coaching as demonstrated through their coursework. Describe their role in shaping their student athletes to become physically educated students. Understand the physiology of muscles and plyometics. Understand the seven categories of plyometric exercises and the relative demands they place on the athlete. Comprehend the most important considerations in implementing and administering a plyometric training program. Assess and test the vertical and linear jumping ability of your student athletes. Apply the steps and principles to develop a sport-specific plyometric training program for a student athlete. Appreciate the human body and its ability to perform physical activity. Course Requirements Students will be expected to: Read and apply the text, Jumping into Plyometrics to all assignments. Complete the Analysis and Application Papers based on the Jumping into Plyometrics textbook. Create a Plyometric Program for a student athlete based on the information in the Jumping into Plyometrics textbook and the course binder. Implement the Plyometric Program you designed above for four weeks and write a brief reflection on the positive and negative aspects of the program. Interview an athletic coach about his/her current training program and ways he/she could enhance it with plyometric training principles presented in this course. Complete all assignments within the allocated timeframe 1 year from enrollment date. Submit all typed coursework in the organized format described within the Schedule of Topics and Assignments section. Keep a copy of their coursework in the event something gets lost or destroyed in the mail. Complete the designated assignments for the B grade / Credit or A grade option. The participant s grade will be determined by the quality and number of assignments they choose to complete. Four assignments - All coursework must receive 80% or better for participants who are working for the B letter grade or Credit option. Seven assignments - All coursework must receive 90% or better for participants who are working for the A letter grade option. Any assignment falling below the 80% threshold will not receive credit for the course. Outlined below are the assignment requirements for each type of grade. Schedule of Topics and Assignments This section of the syllabus describes exactly what material the participant must cover and in what sequence. Assignments and activities are integrated with the topics to show the relationship between learning and practice within a standards-based learning environment. Analysis and Application Papers Purpose - The Analysis and Application papers address the various chapters and issues covered in your Jumping into Plyometrics text. Each paper will be 3 to 4 pages and include two sections: analysis (discussing the major points presented in the chapter) and application (applying the major points to a periodization program). The Analysis and Application papers are the primary mechanism by which you will provide evidence of the following: a) Providing a written overview of each specific reading assignment, b) Demonstrating the ability to apply the information presented via a written application to each chapter, c) Integrating your experience with the course material, verifying that you have successfully completed the reading assignments. Video Analysis and Program Design Purpose - To develop a working understanding of the principles and applications for plyometric training. In addition, the coach or teacher will have the opportunity to develop an actual plyometric workout program that he/she can use with student athletes. The coach will also be encouraged to design the plyometric training program reflecting any unique demands required for a specific sport. Coach s Interview Interview an active coach focusing on his/her current training program. You will develop a list of questions that will address his/her current training program and his/her interest in integrating some of the plyometric training principles covered in this course into his/her own training program. Purpose - This assignment will help you gain a deeper understanding of the other coach s perspective on plyometric training programs by interviewing an active coach focusing on his/her current training program. You will develop a list of questions related to his/her current training program and interest in integrating some of the plyometric training principles covered in this course into his/her current training program. Not all coaches believe that plyometric training can improve athletic performance. Some (even well educated) coaches believe that time would be better spent on skill development. Research has found that an effective plyometric training program will significantly increase an athlete s performance (Refer to the Bibliography in your course binder). Training Program Reflection Purpose - Implement the Plyometric Training Program you designed above for at least four (4) weeks. After four (4) weeks, write a brief reflection addressing positive and negative aspects of the program. This exercise is useful for evaluating your training program and gathering ideas that will make future programs successful. By taking a little time to reflect, you should objectively see principles that worked well and those that need modifications. In either case you will develop greater appreciation for your strength improvement program. HPT 904- - Plyometric Training for Sports Page 4 of 6

Instructor / Student Contact This course requires a minimum of three phone conversations between the student and the instructor during the duration of the course. The first contact point occurs after the student enrolls in the course. The instructions contact the student by phone to welcome them to the course and Fresno Pacific University, if this is the student s first course through CPD. The instructor provides an overview of the course, material, assignments, and expectations. This initial interaction also establishes a foundation for the course and future interactions (via email or phone). The second interaction occurs after the student submits via email their draft version of the training program. The follow-up phone conversation occurs about a week after the student submitted their training program to allow the instructor time to review and develop appropriate feedback. The phone conversation provides for a mid-point progress report to the student and to communicate feedback around their training program, which is key to the course. The final phone conversation occurs at the end of the course after the student has submitted all the required course assignments either via email or postal mail. This interaction provides for a final report to the student around the course assignments and discussion around how the course could be improved to meet the student s needs.
