Big Fat Lie #1 Metabolism is All About Burning Calories Most people talk about your metabolism like it s all about burning calories. But that s kind of like saying the only thing your car engine does is burn gas. The truth is, the diet industry has hijacked the word metabolism so that people only think of it in terms of calories. But your metabolism is so much more than that! Think of your metabolism as how every cell in your body uses energy. The health of each individual cell determines whether that cell can function properly. Nutrients, hormones, and many other factors determine how these cells use energy and function on a daily basis. Whether it s your digestive system, your liver, your thyroid each system in your body must do its job. If one is not function properly, it s like the transmission going out in your car. Sure, everything else in your car is working fine, but without the transmission doing its job, you re going to have some serious trouble driving. So when I talk about metabolism I m talking about how everything works together to promote optimal health in every system in your body. When you think about it that way, burning calories by itself sounds kind of petty. For instance, most of us know that you can force your body to burn more calories by taking amphetamines. And most of us also know that s a terrible idea! Your body will burn more calories, but your overall health will suffer in the process. From now on, think big when you think about your metabolism. You don t just want to burn more calories. You want to thrive! Think big when you think about your metabolism. You don t just want to burn more calories. You want to thrive! 2
Big Fat Lie #2 Your Metabolism Needs a Crash Diet Okay, I ll admit no one actually says this. But they definitely imply it. Diet after diet will claim it boosts your metabolism. Usually this is through some magic supplement or maybe eliminating a few food groups or eating only from the allowed list you get the idea. But take a closer look. All of these diets actually recommend the same thing: eat less. A whole lot less. Most of them recommend as little as 1200 calories a day or even less. They also usually recommend cutting stuff out. A whole lot of stuff. Like bread. Or sugar. Or all carbs. Or chocolate. Or fat. Or meat. Or eggs. Take your pick. Diets are all about restriction. Well, your metabolism doesn t know the difference between Atkins or South Beach or Sugar Busters or Pritikin. Your metabolism only understands two things: time of plenty or famine. It s only prepared for these two scenarios. So when you re dieting, your metabolism interprets it as - you guessed it a famine. Obviously your body is rigged to guard against things like a famine. It s built to fight back. And that s when you feel like you re at war with your body. But really, your body isn t fighting you. It s just fighting the diet. It has no idea you re doing this intentionally! The point is, crash diets are the last thing your metabolism needs. What your body really needs is a little bit of love and a whole lot of balance. Big Fat Lie #3 Metabolism is All About What You Eat Back to the car analogy. Your car needs gas, no doubt about it. Without some fuel, your car is going nowhere. But that s not all it needs. Try driving without oil. Or tires. Even with a full tank of gas, you re gonna have issues. It s the same with your metabolism. Food is vitally important to your metabolic health. I won t downplay that point at all. In fact, the longest chapters in my book The Nourished Metabolism are dedicated to food. But what you eat isn t the only thing you should think about if you want to improve your metabolic health. You should also be asking: Can I reduce my stress load or improve how I handle stress? Is my digestive system working properly? Do I get enough quality sleep? Am I exercising in the best way for my current health? Is body hate getting in the way of making truly healthy choices for my body? All of these factors come into play when it comes to your metabolism. You don t want to just obsess over what you eat and forget everything else in your life (that s actually doing you way more harm than good). We re looking for a harmony between all the areas of your life. That s when your metabolism thrives. And that s when you reach happy and healthy. By now, you might be getting a feel for the way I think. The point is: the diet and weight loss industry profits (like in billions) when you think you re broken. When you feel powerless. When you hate your body. You want to be healthy. You want to be happy. I m cool with that. But magic pills and hating yourself won t get you to happy and healthy. They are the road to stress and misery. Let s get off that road, shall we? Stick with me and I ll share what I know. I mean, I don t have a magic crystal ball but I do have a few years of grueling experience under my belt when it comes to learning what it takes to be happy and healthy. And if that experience can help you even just a little that s what this is all about for me. I look forward to connecting with you more in the future!
