EAA Chapter 1414 Leading Edge April, 2011 March Meeting Fifty people came to the EAA Chapter 1414 meeting on March 8 to hear guest speaker Tom Kalina. Tom is chief pilot for the SC Johnson Company in Racine, Wisconsin. In 1996, when Samuel Johnson decided to build a replica of his father s "Carnaúba Sikorsky S-38, Tom became the project engineer and senior pilot of the project. Tom shared a fascinating power point presentation about the history of the original Sikorsky S-38 and the building of the replica. He told the story of the original expedition in 1935, the search for its crash site in New Guinea and the 1998 expedition. Tom is also a notable aviation artist. He shared some of his work the expedition inspired, as well as, that of some commercial airliners. His website for his art is www.airlinerart.com or wwwtomkalina.com. Volunteers Need For Young Eagles During Pancake Breakfasts! One of the best parts of being an EAA member is sharing our love of aviation with others. One great way to do this is by becoming a Young Eagles volunteer. The EAA Young Eagles program was launched in 1992 to give interested young people, ages 8-17, an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane. These flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers. The first step in the Young Eagles "Flight Plan" is the first flight. After the flight, the young person receives a logbook which includes a code to activate Step 2; a free EAA student membership, which includes a subscription to Sport Aviation Magazine online, e-newsletters, scholarship opportunities, and other benefits. After activating the membership, the Young Eagle can take advantage Step 3; the Sporty s Complete Flight Training Course a $215 value - offered for free! This online course is designed to take the young person all the way through the process of passing the FAA written exams. It s a great way to begin an aviation education. After completing Part 1 (Recreational Pilot Course) of the Sporty s program, the young person qualifies for Step 4; a free flight lesson voucher at a flight school of their choice. Last but not least, after finishing the entire Sporty's course, the student has access to Step 5: EAA flight training scholarships. There are up to 47 scholarships available to help pay for flight training, attendance at the EAA Air Academy, or college tuition. Chapter 1414 will be holding Young Eagles rallies on June 12, August 14, and October 9 in conjunction with our Chapter Pancake Breakfasts. We are looking for volunteer pilots, people to handle registration, people to escort young people to and from aircraft, and people to direct aircraft on the ground. For more information on becoming a volunteer, including pilot and insurance requirements, check out http://www.youngeagles.org/volunteers/volunteer.asp. If you would like to volunteer your time to support the chapter and the Young Eagles program, please contact Ed Myers at e.j.myers@comcast.net.
