1 California Rare Fruit Growers October 2017 Pomegranates with Jose Gallego Friday, October 20 7:00 PM MiraCosta College Student Center, Aztlan Room A/B José s interest in growing rare fruits started in 1973 when he was getting his B.S./M.S. Degrees in Chemistry in Guadalajara, México where he was introduced to many unusual fruits. When he returned to Tijuana in 1978, he was told by many people that he would not be able to grow any of them. He recently retired after working for over 27 years for the City of San Diego as Supervising Chemist and recently returned as a Provisional Employee to assist in implementing a database for all the City s laboratories. José has published three computer books, holds two patents and written many scientific articles in the areas of chemistry, physics, computers and psychology. Has participated as a speaker at scientific conferences, conducted computer training, and workshops in many major US cities, as well as a guest speaker at several CRFG Chapters. José has been a member of the San Diego Chapter in 1996, since then he has served as webmaster, Vice-Chair and, for several terms, as Chairman for the San Diego Chapter, and Co-Chair the 1998 and 2007 Festivals of Fruit. José is a member of the Board of Directors of CRFG, Inc., for the second time, and is Contributing Editor and Department Manager for the Fruit Gardener Magazine. José currently has over 100 different fruit trees at his home in San Diego, CA which he will brag about it tonight in his presentation. Finally, he is also a recognized coin collector and is the President of the Heartland Coin Club in San Diego as well as Historian for the San Diego County Inter-Club Numismatic Council. e

2 Cheers From The Chair It is starting to feel like fall. I got up this morning, and there was a briskness to the air that I have not felt in some time. After another warm summer, I know that both my plants and I will enjoy the cooler nights and crisp mornings. If we get a bit of rain this month, I will be able to turn off my irrigation for the season and let my plants start to go into their winter dormant modes. With a few spots opening up in my yard, I will be planning for a few more plantings this season, in addition to my winter vegetables. October has always been one of my favorite months to put things out in the ground. I think that the plants get a month or so of warm soil to get over transplant shock and the inactive winter to help the root systems establish themselves before the spring growing season commences. I also stop up-potting my subtropical plants and seedlings in October. Experience has taught me that if I repot plants too late in the year, I have a lot of issues with root rot over the winter. It seems as though that with the cooler weather my potting soil can t dry out quickly and the plant roots cannot absorb enough of the water to make a difference. So even those plants that really could use a larger pot, are going to have to wait until spring. For those of you that do have space, now is a great time to look into what bare root trees you might want to plant this winter. It is much better to do your homework now, learning which trees and rootstocks do best in your particular location, than to walk into a garden center in January and be overwhelmed by the choices. Another benefit of starting now, is that many of our local garden centers participate in the Dave Wilson SOFT program, where you can special order many trees and rootstocks that would not otherwise be available. Call or stop by your local purveyor to see if they participate. Finally, with the change of seasons, I start thinking about next season s grafts. I find myself looking at my trees, trying to see where there might be a branch in a good location to add another variety. I start putting out feelers to see who might have scion wood of varieties that I am interested in, and letting others know what I have that they might be interested in. MEMBER ONLY PLANT SALE / TRADE This year at the Oct / Nov meetings we will have a member 'sell/trade' sale. Only one item per member and they do not pay a commission. If you have a plant or other item, please groom your plant, label the variety, price, your name and put into a bag to keep the table & floor clean. You may bring a bag of fruit or veggies or a decorated pot or other garden related items. Remember, only one item per member. If this is successful we may continue it next year. This is a good time to sell something that you really wanted to sell or trade. Please see Dottie.
