Statement of Need: According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability in the United States. TBIs contribute to about 30% of all injury deaths. Every day, 153 people in the United States die from injuries that include TBI. Those who survive a TBI can face effects that last a few days, or the rest of their lives. Effects of TBI can include impaired thinking or memory, movement, sensation (e.g., vision or hearing), or emotional functioning (e.g., personality changes, depression). These issues not only affect individuals but can have lasting effects on families and communities. This activity is designed to educate participants through didactic lecture on the state of current treatments, rehabilitation components and comprehensive management of concussions and TBIs. An emphasis will be placed on current research, evidence-based practice and techniques utilized by medical professionals to achieve high quality patient outcomes as well as the associated controversies related to the clinical care of this patient population. Learning Objectives: All continuing medical education activities are designed to improve patient care, safety and outcomes. At the conclusion of this conference, participants should be able to: Evaluate the role of diet prescriptions in managing dysphagia and other disorders pertaining to Traumatic Brain Injury. Determine the most appropriate return to learn strategy for the post-tbi patient who is involved with an educational/scholastic activity. Describe the role of advanced imaging in determining prognosis and recovery from TBI and concussion. Summarize the neuropsychological impact of pain and ways to improve integration into the community during recovery from TBI. Discuss the role of post-tbi patient rehabilitation and how rehabilitation protocols assist with returning patients to an active lifestyle with a positive outcome.
