Program Request - Abbreviated Template Utah State University Bachelor of Music, Organ Performance Emphasis 10/03/2013 Section I: Request The Utah State University Department of Music seeks approval to offer an organ emphasis within the existing Bachelor of Music degree. Section II: Need An informal surveyed was taken involving 20 current piano emphasis majors to determine interest in the proposed organ emphasis. Two of the students indicated they would switch to organ performance given the opportunity to do so. According to the National Association of Schools of Music national statistics (http://nasm.arts-accredit.org/index.jsp?page=statistical%20information), organ programs traditionally have small enrollments. The program will be capped at 8 students with the organ emphasis major. We currently have 13 students, including music majors and non-music majors, taking organ studio instruction. The University of Utah offers a Bachelor of Music degree with organ emphasis. Other state institutions offer organ instruction but not as a major field of study. Section III: Institutional Impact No significant impact on class size is anticipated. There will be no change to existing administrative structures, nor will any changes in faculty or staff be required. No new equipment or facilities needed are required to implement the program. USU has the historically significant Campbell/Holtkamp pipe organ as the anchor instrument for the program. The Music Department also has three excellent electronic organs for use by students as practice instruments. There are several fine instruments in the Logan region that can be used to augment the university instruments. Section IV: Finances No budgetary impact is anticipated for any other programs or departmental unit. No additional state funding will be needed to implement the organ emphasis program.
