This dcument is nt intended t be a fixed dcument but rather ne that is reviewed n an annual basis and mdified in accrdance with the input f the member schls and supprted by a majrity vte f the member schls. Any significant changes t this dcument in the future wuld be made with due regard fr the ability f the schls t adapt their curriculum accrdingly. Nte: The educatinal cmpetencies in this dcument are "in additin" t the cmpetencies nted fr the Ayurvedic Cunselr. Schls wh chse t d s, may exceed these guidelines in their training prgrams. SECTION I: SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES SECTION COUNSELING AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS NCAE Scpe f Practice Descriptin: The Dctr shuld have the necessary skills t supprt a patient in the implementatin f Ayurveda int their lives. As cunseling is a brad field with many appraches t creating behavir change, the NCAE des nt advise schls n a methdlgy but requires schls t teach ne r mre methds t their students fr the purpse f implementing Ayurveda int their lives. Related Pre-requisite r Cmplementary Knwledge: T be determined by the individual schl Testing: Nne Persnal and Family Health Histry NCAE Scpe f Practice Descriptin: The Dctr shuld have the ability t take a detailed current and past persnal and family health histry. In rder t be cmpetent, the dctr shuld have the fllwing ability / abilities: The ability t gather infrmatin by utilizing standardized frms and fllw up questins The NCAE des nt advise schls n creating frms but encurages schls t include this in their educatin Required Knwledge: All f the abve plus; Knwledge f the patients lifestyle, wrk, relatinships and daily rutines

Vital Signs NCAE Scpe f Practice Descriptin: The Dctr shuld have the skills t be able t effectively take basic vital signs such as bld pressure, respiratin, height, weight. In rder t be cmpetent, the Dctr shuld have the fllwing ability / abilities: Ability t take and interpret a patients measurements Ability t take and interpret a patients height and weight Ability t take and interpret a patients Western pulse Ability t take and interpret bld pressure Required Knwledge: Knwledge f the cmpnents f each examinatin Knwledge f what is nrmal and what is abnrmal fr each vital sign Testing: Theretical Testing Only. Schls will be required t prvide practical testing. Nidana NCAE Scpe f Practice Descriptin: The Dctr shuld have the skills t be able t determine the etilgical factrs (nidana) respnsible fr the dshic imbalance. In rder t be cmpetent, the dctr shuld have the fllwing ability / abilities: The ability t interpret the case histry t determine the factrs that have caused the general dshic imbalance with the patient The ability t understand hw specific behavirs may disturb specific systems f the bdy and cause disease Required Knwledge: Knwledge f the factrs that cause dshas t verflw Knwledge f the three fundamental causes f disease and hw the misuse f the senses, repressin f urges and inapprpriate daily and seasnal practices disturb the dshas.

Knwledge f the assciatins between inapprpriate behavirs and specific diseases. Testing: Prvided with a case histry, the student shuld be able t identify the factrs in a patient's life that are cntributing t the disease. The Dctr shuld be able t make assciatins n a multiple chice questin that link tgether a behavir and a specific cnditin in the bdy. Twenty Gunas NCAE Scpe f Practice Descriptin: The Dctr shuld be able tdetermine which gunas are predminant in the prakruti and vikriti. In rder t be cmpetent, the dctr shuld have the fllwing ability / abilities: The Dctr shuld have the ability t determine the rle and influence f the ten ppsing qualities (guruvadi gunas) in the prakruti and vikruti thrugh the data received frm the histry and examinatin f the patient. Required Knwledge: Knwledge f the 10 pairs f ppsite qualities (guruvadi gunas) assciated with the five elements (pancha maha bhutus) and the three dshas (tridsha) Ability t assciate the qualities with the symptms f vikruti Testing: Prakruti: Given the findings f a histry and exam n a patient the Dctr shuld be able t ascertain the qualities inherent in the persn. Vikruti: Given the findings f a histry and exam n a patient the dctr shuld be able t ascertain the qualities f the symptm Prakruti and Vikruti NCAE Scpe f Practice Descriptin: The Dctr shuld have the ability t assess prakruti and vikruti using Ayurvedic methdlgies f bservatin and examinatin. In rder t be cmpetent, the Dctr shuld have the fllwing abilities: Trividha Pariksha: The ability t use the fllwing three tls in diagnsis; Tuch (Sparshanam): Observatin (Darshanam) Questining (Prasnam)

Ashtavidha Pariksha: The ability t apprpriately use the fllwing eight tls in diagnsis; Pulse Assessment (Nadi Pariksha) Urine Assessment (Mutra Pariksha) Stl Assessment (Mala pariksha) Tngue Assessment (Jihva Pariksha) Speech and Vice Assessment ( Shabda Pariksha). Skin Assessment (Sparsha Pariksha). Assessment f Eyes (Drika Pariksha) General Appearance f external features - Face, Nse (Akriti pariksha) Dashavidha Pariksha : The ability t assess the patient utilizing the criteria: Dushyam- Structural and functinal abnrmalities f the bdy Desham -Gegraphical nature f the place where patient lives Balam -Physical strength Kalam- The seasn and climatic cnditins Analam -The digestive system f the patient Prakriti- Cnstitutin Vayas -Age f the patient Satvam- Psychlgical nature f the patient Sathmyam- General and persnal habits f the patient (ie. smking) Aharam- Nature f the patients diet and sensry intake (e.g. vegetarian r nn-vegetarian) Required Knwledge: Knwledge f hw t interpret the findings leading t the crrect cnclusin f prakruti and vikruti. Testing: Presented with findings, the Dctr shuld be able t interpret the findings and cme t a prper diagnsis f prakruti and vikruti. Schls t be respnsible fr practical testing. Subdshas NCAE Scpe f Practice Descriptin: The Dctr shuld be able t shw skill and cmpetency in determining which subdshas are affected by a disease. In rder t be cmpetent, the dctr shuld be able t: Assess a symptm and determine the subdsha(s) respnsible Required Knwledge: Knwledge f the lcatins and functins f each subdsha

Knwledge f the signs and symptms f disturbance t each subdsha Testing: Presented with a symptm, the Dctr shuld be able t determine the subdsha that is mst clsely assciated with the cnditin. Dhatus / Upadhatus NCAE Scpe f Practice Descriptin: The Dctr shuld be able t assess each dhatu / upadhatu and determine if it is affected by disease. In rder t be cmpetent, the dctr shuld be able t: Assess each dhatu and upadhatu Assess symptms and determine the dhatus and upadhatus invlved in the disease Required Knwledge: Knwledge f the seven dhatus and their related upadhatus Knwledge f hw dhatus are frmed Knwledge f hw t assess each dhatu and upadhatu Knwledge f the signs and symptms that ccur when a dhatu is infiltrated by a dsha Knwledge f healthy dhatus Testing: Presented with a symptm, the dctr shuld be able t determine the dhatu that is invlved in the cnditin. Srtamsi NCAE Scpe f Practice Descriptin: The Dctr shuld be able t assess each srta and determine which srta is invlved in the presenting symptm. NCAE Scpe f Practice Descriptin: The Dctr shuld be able t assess the state f the malas and dhatu malas. In rder t be cmpetent, the dctr shuld have the fllwing knwledge r skill: Ability t assess the grss malas and dhatu malas Ability t recgnize the signs and symptms f nrmal and vitiated mala Related Pre-requisite r Cmplementary Knwledge: Knwledge f what cnstitutes the nrmal and abnrmal quantity and qualities f malas Testing: Presented with the results f an assessment f a mala, the dctrs shuld be able t identify the dsha that has vitiated the mala. Agni - Ama NCAE Scpe f Practice Descriptin: The Dctr shuld be able t assess the clinical state f agni, and ama in the patient thrugh questining and bservatin. In rder t be cmpetent, the dctr shuld have the fllwing knwledge r skill: Ability t determine the state f agni by questining the client abut appetite, digestin and eliminatin Ability t recgnize the signs and symptms f ama in the bdy by bservatin f the tngue, stls and bdy dr Required Knwledge: Knwledge f the thirteen majr agnis Knwledge f the functin f agni Knwledge f the symptms and signs f the fur states f agni Knwledge f hw ama is frmed Testing: Given the findings based n a histry (questining) and exam (bservatin), the Dctr shuld be able t determine the state f agni and ama. Samprapti (Dctr) NCAE Scpe f Practice Descriptin: The Dctr shuld be able t shw skill and cmpetency in determining the current stage f samprapti by bservatin (darshana), tuch (sparshana) and questining (prashna). In rder t be cmpetent, the Dctr shuld be able t assess the fllwing: The Dctr shuld be able t evaluate the patient and determine the stage f pathlgy the patient is experiencing. Required Knwledge

NCAE Scpe f Practice Descriptin: The Dctr shuld be able t shw skill and cmpetency in the understanding f the majr diseases affecting each system f the bdy. The Dctr shuld be able t shw knwledge f the majr diagnstic and labratry tests used in Western Medicine. In rder t be cmpetent, the Dctr shuld be able t d the fllwing: Be able t read the results f a typical CBC, UA and Bld Chemistry; understand nrmal and abnrmal and what each test means. Be able t interpret reprts frm the fllwing tests: X-ray Diagnstic Ultrasund MRI Endscpy CT Scan Clnscpy Bne Scan Laparscpy Required Knwledge: Knwledge f what each test is and what it tests fr. Knwledge f when the tests are indicated Knwledge f what a nrmal and abnrmal test means Understanding f the cncept f false negatives and false psitives Knwledge f the terminlgy necessary t read the reprts Testing: Prvided with a disease, the Dctr shuld be able t identify the basic tests utilized t bth diagnse and mnitr the cnditin. Research NCAE Scpe f Practice Descriptin: The Dctr shuld be capable f reviewing literature and writing their wn reviews f medical and Ayurvedic literature. In rder t be cmpetent, the Dctr shuld be able t d the fllwing: Write a cherent review f literature Required knwledge: Knwledge f different types f research designs (Blind, Duble Blind, Cntrlled, etc) Knwledge f hw t scan the pub-med database Knwledge f hw t read the basic results f research Knwledge f hw t prperly write citatins Testing: T be managed by the schls. SECTION 2: RECOMMENDATIONS, TREATMENT AND OTHER INTERVENTIONS
