DG s Ramblings Newsletter of District Governor Lance Maytham September 2016 www.lionsdist410a.org.za Edition 3 Notes from our DG September kicked off with a long trip to Moorreesburg. LP Dries Ludick preparing the batter On our way back from Moorreesburg, we stopped off at the Victor Verster Correctional Centre to take a look at the Nelson Mandela statue. We were quite impressed by a section in the inscription on the base of the statue, this being very close to IP Bob Corlew s theme. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. The LC Table View were very well represented as marshals and drivers on this day. Lion Rosemarie also pulled her weight by accompanying the pilot car and ended up assisting PDG Liz at the final control. Which way now?? Ceres LC members ready with their delicious fish n chips
On Monday 5 September, the DG Team planned to have a Skype meeting. This being a first for some of us, turned out to be a bit of a disaster as some of us could connect and lose connection and then use the cell phone to try to connect again! Others like me, the DG, did not have a clue how to do this successfully! We will try to hold another Skype meeting in October, as our September skype meeting had to be cancelled due to a Your Club Your Way presentation by PDG Paula Lang. Tuesday 6 September, Lion Rosemarie and I attended the LC Tokai GBM. This was a meeting with a difference as LP Jules had arranged for a very interesting guest speaker. Stanford Hill gave an interesting talk on drugs and gangsters in Lavender Hill. This club is not shy when it comes to projects and under the leadership of LP Jules, they are doing fantastic work in the community! Well done LC Tokai. A special word of thanks to LP Jules and Lion Charlie for inviting us to stay over for the night. It was much appreciated. On Wednesday 7 September, we surprised LP Sandy, at the District Office, with a flowering pot plant for Secretaries day. The evening I gave my Cabinet Secretary, PDG Jimmy Lang a small gift for being my Cabinet Secretary. Thank you to the two of you for all that you are doing for the Lions and Leos in District 410A. pg 2 That evening, we were invited by LC Kirstenbosch to attend and officiate at a Special General Meeting where I inducted 14 new members into LC Kirstenbosch! This was a momentous occasion for me and all present. I also had the opportunity to meet PID Monaj Shah from Kenya, who was in Cape Town for a medical surgical procedure. Later the same evening, I had the honour of inducting Dr Kamaljeet Giddie, his surgeon, into the LC Greater Nairobi, Kenya. I believe that Lion Kamaljeet was so impressed by becoming a Lion that he wore his Lions pin to theatre the next day! Saturday 10 September saw us back in Cape Town before 8am! LP Sundru Pillay from LC Kirstenbosch had invited us to attend their Future Champions Sports Day for orphans and abandoned children at the Jan Burger Sportsgrounds in Parow. Seven homes with a total of 1200 children were present. As there was a shortage of officials, Lion Rosemarie and I ended up handing over all the medals for the track and field events to the athletes. Many of the children asked Lion Rosemarie for hugs and drukkies as they did not have an Ouma to hug them! We did this task with love and as Lions we are always ready to serve. This was quite an emotional project and would love to help again next year!
Hierdie klub is n ware boere familie klub. Tuesday 13 September, saw us once again meeting up with the Table View Lions as we attended their GBM. This is a large club with a large variety of projects. Their meeting was run very professionally with each portfolio chairperson giving a detailed report of their activities. As this was my off weekend, I used the time to officiate on the Cape Toyota Dealer Rally as sweeper together with my daughter Gaenor. I was given the use of the new Toyota Hilux. What a beauty to drive on gravel roads at a high speed. Lion Rosemarie took this opportunity to switch off and spectate on the rally. Great fun was had by all!
On Wednesday 21 September we attended the GBM of LC Groote Schuur. This small club is struggling to raise funds for their projects account. LP Pam MacRobert held a well-run meeting and made us feel extremely welcome. On the road again..! This time to LC Table View to attend their Local is Lekker South African evening on Friday 23 September at their club house at Killarney race track. Thanks to 2nd VDG Rocky Wright for the awesome prizes the two of us received. A wonderful evening was had by all! great thanks to Lion Dave & Karen Morrison for providing us with wonderful accommodation! Best-dressed winner prospective member Colin Drummond Tucking into home-made vetkoek, boere wors, chakalaka, smoor and 3-bean salad & koeksisters yummy Saturday morning 24 September, we popped into the Clivia Flower show at Tygervalley and said hi to DG Zwaai Kruger from District 410D. It was great to see him, his wife, Carrie and their three children.
On Sunday 25 September we had a culture evening at the Napier Dutch Reformed Church where we enjoyed listening to a choral, solo and strings performance. Tuesday 27 September, we visited the De Tyger Leos where I inducted Darryl Brown. This was the first time I visited a Leo club meeting and was pleasantly surprised at how professional their meeting was run and the amount of projects that they do and have planned. Wednesday 28 September, I attended a Your Club Your Way presentation by PDG Paula at the Belmont Centre, Rondebosch. It is an eye opener to see how many different ways a club can be run. Special Announcements 29 October See For Yourself Mid-Year Conference bookings have closed!!! 3 December District Christmas Party for Children at Intaka Island Final words from DG Lance After travelling 4655 km, just for Lions & Leos during this month, I feel a bit heart sore as I realise that my first quarter of my DG year has passed by so quickly. It has been worth while doing all this travelling to be able to meet the Lions and Leos in District 410A and see what they are doing! Gaan voort met julle goeie werk! Until next month...
