1 Welcome to the September edition of our monthly Newsletter This Newsletter contains information about Jersey Alzheimer s Association s services and activities in support of people affected by dementia. JAA Services Where does your money go? The current running costs of the charity are 250,000 per annum. We are very grateful to members of the public and the business community in Jersey who enable us to provide the range of services we do. In order to ensure that our services are sustainable, we aim to develop links with organisations which offer financial support for a number of years, as well as support for one year. We are actively seeking Charity Champions for 2018, and beyond. Support for Carers Friendship Group September Meeting At the meeting of Friendship Group on Saturday 9 September we enjoyed another excellent lunch at Rocco s Bar and Restaurant, Les Mielles Golf and Country Club. It was great to see a number of new members joining us. Next Meeting NB The Friendship Group Meeting on 14 October has been cancelled due to the Recharger Day for Carers on 21 October (see details below). The next meeting of Friendship Group will be on Saturday 11 November at Sandybrook Day Centre from 10am to 12noon more details to follow.

2 Future Meetings The last Meeting of Friendship Group in 2017 will be a Christmas lunch on Saturday 9 December at The Monterey Hotel in St Helier from 1pm to 3pm. Please contact Mark by ringing or ing Mark@jerseyalzheimers.com to book a place. Friendship Group meetings are on the second Saturday of the month either at Sandybrook Day Centre (generally with speakers) from 10am to 12noon or meals out/trips to different venues. We welcome ideas for future speakers and venues for meals Friendship Group Dates: 13 January, 10 February, 10 March, 14 April, 12 May, 9 June, 14 July, 11 August, 8 September, 13 October, 10 November, 8 December Volunteer News Jackie Gordon has kindly started work as a Volunteer Fundraising Administrator for JAA. Jackie s address is: Jackie@jerseyalzheimers.com Jackie is helping Mark with the many fundraising events which people kindly bring to us or which the charity itself initiates. In Jackie s first week she helped to co-ordinate the many volunteers who helped sell programmes and collect donations at the Battle of Flowers Parades! Events Recent JAA events Over 20 brave Daredevils for Dementia have so far taken to the skies this year by doing tandem skydives thanks to Skydive Jersey. Thanks to all involved: the skydivers, and their supporters and sponsors. We are now planning 2018 skydive and abseil dates.

3 The Halkett Hoedown Community Street Party aims to raise thousands of pounds for local charities. This year it took place in St Helier on Saturday 27 August. JAA was chosen as one of five charities to benefit from the event. Thank you to all who attended and to the wonderful JAA volunteers who helped staff the day. Future JAA events This month - as ever - we are marking World Alzheimer s Day which falls on 21 September with a week of awareness raising and fundraising events, as follows:- Saturday 16 September: Information & Fundraising Stall outside M&S in King Street from 10am to 3pm volunteers needed, please contact Jackie@jerseyalzheimers.com Tuesday 19 September: Information & Fundraising Stall at the Co-op in St Peter s from 10am to 3pm volunteers needed, please contact Jackie@jerseyalzheimers.com An invitation for all family carers to attend An Evening with Tommy Whitelaw: One man s mission to raise awareness of dementia - Son, Carer, Campaigner at The Monterey Hotel from 6.30pm to 8.30pm with light refreshments. Tommy is UK Project Engagement Lead for the Health and Social Care Alliance s Dementia Carer Voices Project. Please contact Michala via Michala@jerseyalzheimers.com or ring if you wish to attend. Thursday 21 September: HSSD Dementia Conference at the General Hospital, at which Sian Wareing-Jones is one of the invited speakers. At the Conference two Awards, both of which are sponsored by JAA, will be presented: the Hospital Champion s Award and the Mike Tomkinson Award. These awards are made each year to individuals or groups of people who have shown exceptional person-centred care in the field of dementia. Details of the recipients of the awards will be published in the next Newsletter. NB This Conference is not a public event.

4 Friday 22 September: Dress Down Fundraising Day to wear Purple Monday 25 & Tuesday 26 September: Street Collections in St Helier volunteers needed, please contact The next dementia friendly community day will be on Monday 16 October when we will be holding a Lunchtime Dance at St Clement s Parish Hall from 11am to 2.30pm. Live music will be provided by local band Foolish Things. We are inviting everyone to bring a packed lunch so that people can stay for as long as possible. We will be serving cake, teas and coffees. Please let Mark know if you would like to attend: Mark@jerseyalzheimers.com or ring Thank you dementia friendly community dates are as follows: 19 February, 8 May, 9 July, 16 October and 9 December JAA has partnered with Le Masurier to host the inaugural RECHARGER Day on Saturday 21 October, based at the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel. It will be a relaxing and fun day for family carers of people with dementia in Jersey. There are over 20 places still available for anyone wishing to attend the day and the wonderful lunch and tea. There is afternoon entertainment as well as individual activities in the morning. 5 Fundraising If you would like to volunteer to help fundraise and/or raise awareness of dementia at any of our events please let Mark know by ing: or by phoning the Drop-in/Office on in the first instance. Online JAA Calendar There will soon be a new online Calendar on the JAA website: which will be a useful additional way for our charity to promote events and to recruit the support that we need from volunteers in order to run awareness and fundraising stalls throughout the year as well as providing our regular services. Stamps and Coins If you have any used stamps or foreign coins and don t know what to do with them please consider giving them to JAA. We are able to convert both used stamps and foreign coins into funds. Raffle Prizes If you have any items that would be suitable for Raffle Prizes please kindly bring them to our Drop-in/Office as every year there are events at which Raffles are held in aid of our charity. Many thanks. Co-op Share Number All Channel Islands Co-operative members can donate their dividend in-store. Jersey Alzheimer's Association's share number is 421. Trustees News The Trustees are finalising Policies and procedures concerned with the governance of the charity. Discussions regarding the proposed appointment of a person with dementia as a Trustee continue.

6 Alzheimer Europe In October this year s Alzheimer Europe Conference is being held in Berlin. JAA will, as always, be represented as the charity is a full member organisation of AE. The current online edition of the monthly AE Magazine includes articles on the Splashchat trip to Japan in April and the Battle of Flowers Parades in August. 8 So, the big question: How do I book myself on RECHARGER DAY? Please contact Mark Blamey, Manager of Jersey Alzheimer s Association, by either phoning or ing Mark@jerseyalzheimers.com to book your place, meal/s and activity. If you can t join us for the whole day please talk to us about joining us for lunch, afternoon tea or signing up for one of the activities. We have made the day as flexible as possible as we hope that many of you can at least join us for some of RECHARGER DAY if not the whole day. Please let Mark know if you wish to use our Saturday Club Day Care service on RECHARGER Day. Saturday Club operates from 9am until 3.30pm weekly at Sandybrook Day Centre, Rue du Craslin, St. Peter, JE3 7ZZ. It gives carers a break, either for the day or for an hour or two. Transport and a three-course lunch are provided, along with a variety of activities. Staff are fully trained in all aspects of person-centred dementia care and training is constantly updated. Around 20 people attend each week and the staff/client ratio is high so that we can provide more personalised care.
