november 2009 PO BOX 801345, DALLAS, TX 75380 www.dahu.org President s Message: Is Health Care Reform Really Cooked? As we approach Thanksgiving, the Democrats continue to apply the heat to get out Health Care Reform cooked and on the books by the end of the calendar year. The House pushed through their version on Saturday, November 7 th ; stuffed with almost 2,000 pages of expensive toppings that mushroomed its projected cost to over $1 trillion dollars. The Pelosi House bill will: Inside this issue: December Luncheon Speaker / New Members Save the Date 3 Special Thanks 4 Membership Appreciation 5 2 1. Increase the cost of Healthcare 2. Increase taxes to citizens and businesses 3. Cuts Medicare benefits 4. Does not address Tort Reform 5. Introduces a public option 6. Negatively impact Private Healthcare Now it is the Senate s turn to debate the merits of their bill; the expected costs and how to justify that it will increase access and lower costs. The realities of both bills are they will increase access for some of the uninsured. However in their current form they fall short because the penalty to not buy insurance is punitive and will allow the younger population to stay on the sidelines until they need coverage. The uninsured that will join are the poorest risk that will drive up costs under our current system. The bill is thin on ways to rework our current system to control the rising costs. Analysis has been provided by different carriers that show a steep premium increase over the next 10 years. As the days pass and the focus with the media shift to other issues it is hard to stay engaged. Please continue to read the information available, respond to Operation Shouts through NAHU, and engage your clients, family, and friends. Call and email your representatives to remind them of your thoughts and concerns. Washington is counting on your focus to drift. For you to assume there is nothing you can do to change the final outcome. That is why I continue to repeat the same message over the past few months of my term. You must continue the fight. This is too big of an issue to walk away. If you are seeking ways to help; recruit a new member or convince one to renew. Get involved with your local chapter. We need your help in many ways. This fight is a defining moment for our generation. What are you doing to make sure your voice is heard? Don t give up the fight to save our country s Health Care and our Industry s Future.
