Kathy is REALLY getting the hang of being a co-rider Hi everyone I want to take this time to reflect over the past 2 years with myself and my family with GWRRA. When I first joined GWRRA everyone spoke about family. As most know over the past 2 years I ve been fighting cancer and came closer to death then I ever imagined. And then just last month my sisters house being burnt out and loosing everything they have gained over the last 35 years of being married. With this FAMILY that was talked about, I now know the true meaning of the GWRRA FAMILY. With all the well wishes get well cards that have been sent to me it was very touching and now with all the donations that have been sent to my sister in her time of need, I want to THANK EVERYONE involved it has touched me more then you really can imagine. Thanks again. Spanky Barth Chapter L Director Page 3

Rider Education By Jeff McCarter Chapter L Rider Educator I m Safe by Jackie Vaughan Never stop learning and relearning Many people use a checklist to prepare for a trip. It might include gas, tire pressure, first aid kit, et cetera. One item often missing is the condition of the rider himself. Yet the rider s condition is at least as important as the condition of the bike. There is a checklist which allows the rider to check out himself before every trip. Easy to remember, the list is called I m Safe. It stands for illness, medication, stress, alcohol, fatigue and emotion. Let s take a look at how each of these factors affects us. Illness: Many illnesses such as diarrhea, headache or fever can blunt our senses and affect our ability to scan aggressively for hazards or our ability to react to these hazards quickly. Recovering from an illness can do the same. Medication: Medication such as sleeping pills, even taken the night before, or antihistamines can make us drowsy. Antibiotics do a good job of fighting infections but also leave us fatigued for several days. Stress: Just before a trip is not the best time to air our problems. We will be in a much better mood after a good trip. Take time to relax before starting. Another thing to remember: don t bring the kids. Page 8 continued page 9
Rider Education continued Alcohol: Alcohol can be summed up in a single phrase-one drink per hour. Make sure there is no alcohol in your system before you ride. Fatigue: Working long hours at physical labor before a trip is a sure way to start the trip with fatigue. Emotion: We are all aware that being angry or sad at can keep our mind off our riding, but we should know that being very happy can do the same. We need to take time to think things out before we start. Copyright 1996 by Jackie Vaughan. The Rider Education Levels Program is a great way to challenge yourself, and measure your skills and knowledge as a rider or co-rider. We should never stop learning, and even learned skills need regular refreshing. Beginning level 1 is no more than signing a commitment to safe riding, patches and pins are optional. It s a fun way to progress together to become better riders, and co-riders. Looking for the forms to sign up, where to go to take the required courses to move to the next level or maintain your current level, contact me, I will find it for you. mccarter@4- shore.net 410-251-6882 Page 9
