September 2015 Friends & Family of Caladenia Aged Care Busy bags are available to keep children busy on visits to the facility. These are free of charge, & are made for a positive visit for all. Ask Staff We have an ipad for residents to use to Skype family or to surf the internet. Ask Tracey Today is the first day in which the temperature has risen above 20 degrees & I am definitely celebrating. Its great to feel the warmth. It helps me to feel a little more positive & content. I am not sure if it s the extra vitamin D we get from the sun or the pleasure of feeling & seeing a blue sky. Either way, its good to spend some time outside & soak it up. At home I have been planting a new strawberry bed. Usually the birds get to eat the ripened ones before me so this year I have organised for netting to cover the bed sorry birds!! Jitka Tracey s tales Hello everyone, winter is over & I look forward to all the blooms or spring. Welcome to our new readers. Caladenia celebrated our birthday on the 11th of Aug & was 24 years young. We celebration with a Masquerade party. Thanks to all who made this birthday special. We hope that the August Calendar has kept you all very busy. We love to invite families to our events. On the 24th Sep we are having a multigenerational day titled Pirate s Day. Prizes & special games have been planned, so bring your family in & join in the fun. Additionally, we are holding our six monthly memorial service on the 17th August to remember those who have passed away. We are always looking for ways to improve our program, so if you have any suggestions for activities that you would like us to implement, let me know. Happy Fathers Day to all our dads, grand dads poppies, pa s, uncles, brothers, & mentors. We are holding a special afternoon for all of you on the 4th of Sep so come & join in! Another date for your calendar is the 29th of Sep - we encourage families to attend a training session covering sensory communication & support for people who have dementia. Thank you to all who purchased Fathers day raffle tickets. All proceeds go to increasing program choices. Keep smiling Tracey From our unit manager - Jenny Unsworth Hi everyone. What a busy couple of months since taking on this role. I have been encouraged by all of you in my new role. Our team have received some lovely feedback, which always encourages us to keep up the great care we provide. Spring is upon us and our residents will begin to spend more time outdoors. Please ensure that you wear your sun hat outside. Our front door entrance is awaiting repair so please use the door opposite for the time being. Stay safe and happy ~ Jenn Happy Birthday Wishes for August/September August Caladenia September Ruth, Violet, Vik, John, Alex, & John

Happy birthday Caladenia Masquerade Happy Birthday Caladenia. On the 11th of August, 2015 we held our Masquerade party to celebrate the day. We were wowed by the dynamic singing duo D & D aka Sheree & dad. Thank you to all volunteers who made our masks for the day & it goes without saying to D&D too! Our little shop... We have a little gift shop in our facility. All gifts are sold at a very reasonable rate & proceeds go towards the lifestyle program. So next time you are in the reception area take a look in our gift cupboard. You never know what you might find. Thank you to Buds & Branches for our floristry day. We appreciate the support you give us. Our ladies were thrilled with the flowers & their rooms smell delightful. You certainly have a wonderful community spirit, & with businesses like yours in our community, all who live in Kilmore are blessed. Page 2

Our Tupperware party Thank you Jo & son for our Tupperware demonstration We enjoyed the chocolate truffles, & raised some great gifts for our raffle. Thank you to all who supported this fund raiser. International Beer Day Happy hour on the 7th was International Beer Day. Residents got to enjoy a Frothy or two. To think Octoberfest is just around the corner. Help keep our residents safe. Visitors ~ when leavening Caladenia please ensure you do not allow any of our residents follow you out the door. This is extremely important for resident safety. Some residents who have an impairment may become disorientated & lost on leaving. Thank you for your support! S E PT EM BE R 20 15 Page 3

Fund raising for our activities program FATHERS DAY RAFFLE If you would like to donate an item for our raffle please see Tracey. Tickets will be 3 for $5.00 or $2.00 each. If you are interested in selling tickets this would also be a great help. The raffle will be drawn on the 4.9.2015 - come to happy hour & see if you have won. In coming months we will be receiving a donation of a beautiful quilt for our spring raffle. This is coming from a local quilting group ~ Thank you to Debbie Tremlett & her group. We are truly grateful for all the support we receive for the lifestyle program. All the funds raised go into the program to improve programming choices. Can you help?? We are looking for A piece of furniture for our men to do up. Cardboard gift boxes for our rummage boxes A few volunteers to work in this area from 3-4.15 Monday, Wednesday & Friday. A fridge is needed for our residents drinks which are kept in the staff room. If you are able to assist please call Tracey or Jitka Family & friends come & share your talents! Do you or someone you know have a special talent like playing the piano or other musical instrument, singing, games, crafts, gardening, playing cards, computer skills? Would you like to volunteer at Caladenia & contribute to the wonderful variety of activities that we provide. Let us know & they will connect you with our volunteer co-ordinator. Page 4

Friendly pets welcome Almost everyone loves animals & for residents of Caladenia this is no exception. Being able to hold, pat & even observe a pet can be very enjoyable & relaxing. If you have a clean & well behaved pet (who doesn t nip, bite, grab food, or leave unwelcome droppings)) & an occasional hour to spare we would welcome a visit to spend some time with residents. Your pet will need to be on a leash & it is also important that they do not jump up on residents (as the skin of older persons can be fragile). Like the dog on the right sometimes they are the best person for each of us to share some time & stories with. Enjoying mealtimes with residents Families & friends are encouraged to join residents at mealtimes. Sharing a meal time together is a time honoured tradition of family life & you are very welcome to continue this at Caladenia. Join us in the dining room or arrange to use the more private areas of Caladenia to chat & eat. There is a small cost associated with the meal (e.g. soup $2.50; sandwiches $4.00; Salad plate $6.00; Main meal $6.00; yoghurt $2.50; sweets 2.50). To ensure availability you are asked to ring prior to 10 a.m. to order a meal). As the financial administration of meals is managed directly by hospital administration meals ordered by family members will be costed through to the resident. S E PT EM BE R 20 15 Page 5

Resident s Meeting - last Wed of the month 2-4 pm One of the forums in which residents, families & friends can have their say about any issues at Caladenia is through this monthly meeting. The meeting runs once per month & is where residents, families & friends have the opportunity to raise your concerns & discuss them with other residents, family & staff. It is our responsibility to follow-up & where appropriate to make relevant changes. The minutes of the meeting are available to view at reception, so please ask for full details. If you would also like your own copy you can ask a staff member to print one for you. At our latest meeting residents discussed a range of items of interest. One of our regular agenda items is the programming choices residents would like for the next month. Residents were also informed of the upcoming accreditation of aged care. Aged care complaint system We encourage an "open door approach which invites residents to share their concerns with staff. Many people feel uncomfortable about doing this & fear negative consequences of raising issues. However, residents & relatives can be assured that we see complaints or negative feedback as an opportunity to improve the care & services provided. Complaints do not have to be in writing. What can you do if you have a complaint? Tell the staff Tell the Unit Manager (Jenny Unsworth) Tell the Director of Nursing (Jenny Salkeld) Complete a facility feedback Form, available from the front foyer, or ask a staff member for one. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, or aren't happy with the response you can contact the Aged Care Complaints Scheme directly on 1800 550 552. PLEASE HELP US KEEP OUR RESIDENTS SAFE! If you have been visiting Caladenia could you please make sure the doors click back into the locked position when you leave.
