BRIDGING Laboratory THEGAP e-news July 2018

SUCCESS WITH ZIRCONIA New material developments see the need to revise the methods used in order to guarantee long term restoration success. Reliable cementation of restorations represents one of the most sensitive and crucial tasks in the process of prosthetic treatments. Errors made during the cementation process could affect aesthetic results or reduce the fixed stability of the restoration. The primary resistance and retention form of the tooth preparation, are also key contributors responsible for long-term success. Tooth reduction for zirconia-based crowns is less than that required for PFM or traditional all-ceramic crowns. The reasons are that zirconia is very strong and no opaque layer is required. Uniform reduction results in optimum strength and leads to better aesthetics. Smooth edges result in lower stress, lower stress decreases potential for future fracturing. Products have been developed that increase the bond of resin cements to zirconia. Data from outcome studies have confirmed that combining airborne particle abrasion (50micron Al2O3) and resin composites containing 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) monomer, achieve a durable bond of zirconia to a prepared tooth. As methods and materials continue to evolve and develop it is critical to ensure technicians and clinicians follow manufacturer recommendations and use complimentary products according to instructions. Some materials are specifically designed for complimentary use with certain other products, failure to follow these recommendations can also lead to poor or less than optimal results. Success with anything new means adapting to the new methods and techniques required for using these products. When considering bonding zirconia restorations to a tooth or tooth preparation, conventional methods applied to bonding of silica-based ceramics are not successful. You cannot acid etch and silanate the bonding surface as you can with lithium disilicate or other glass ceramic restorations. This is because zirconia is inert and without glassy matrix on which those substances act.

HOT TOPICS IN ORAL MEDICINE The 4th Annual Hot Topics In Oral Medicine hosted by Perth Oral Medicine and Dental Sleep Centre was held on 26th June at Crown Perth Digident Laboratory has once again supported this event by sponsoring a fantastic door prize - a trip for 2 to cruise in the South Pacific. Our sincere congratulations to the lucky winner, we hope that you have an enjoyable trip! Hot Topics In Oral Medicine has once more proven to be a fantastic opportunity to learn from some of the leading specialists our country has to offer. With Professor Camile Farah, Dr Jacinta Vu, Dr Sarah Chaw and Clinical Associate Professor Ramesh Balasubramaniam speaking on the night, attendees were treated to a great range of interesting topics, relevant to clinical practice. Digident Laboratory was lucky enough to have a display table to show off the range of restorations and appliances that our skilled technical staff are capable of manufacturing. This year we also proudly showcased our Digident Laboratory App to dental colleagues. This app has been a work in progress for quite some time and we were able to show how simple ordering and interacting with a lab can be moving into the digital age. Digident Laboratory would like to thank Perth Oral Medicine and Dental Sleep Centre for allowing us to sponsor this years event. We definitely look forward to continuing our support next year.
