Monaye Love
Music to me means more than just words it's about life. Where you ve been, where you came from and where you are going. It s therapy for the soul. Monaye Love Monaye Love hails from St. Paul, Minnesota. She started singing at age 8 and writing at age 11. Her musical influences range from the expected - Stevie Wonder, Jessie Johnson, The Time, Prince, Mazarati and Rachelle Ferrell to the unexpected The Andrew Sisters who were also Minnesota natives from the 1930s. Running out of the gate at full speed at 8 years old, Monaye sang the National Anthem at Alan Page s swearing in to the Minnesota Supreme Court in 1993. From then on, Monaye made it her mission to take advantage of every opportunity afforded to her in school. In junior high, she participated in singing contests, joined her school choir and band, continuously learned to play new instruments and learned a valuable lesson: instead of comparing herself to others, she focused on honing her own skills, finding her uniqueness. As her band teacher told her one day, you were born for music. By the time Monaye reached high school, she was on her path adding studio recording to her list of musical experiences music was her passion and that was all she saw in her future. At age 16, Monaye was offered a recording deal, but was wisely counseled by her mother to turn it down and give herself more time to learn about life and establish her own unshakable foundation. Monaye joined the Gospel group, James Grear & Nu Friends, recording an album with them that earned a Stellar nomination in 2008. She left the group soon after and began performing solo, opening up for major artists like Montel Jordan, Talib Kweli, Young Dro, Sunny Valentine and Twista. Monaye s debut single, Finally Home, was borne from the experience of her husband, Eric, returning home from Iraq where he served in the Air National Guard. It s often very difficult for war veterans to open up about their experiences to family and friends when they return, but Eric opened up to Monaye. She encouraged him to write it down for her. What Eric handed her on that piece of paper was revealing in its intensity and so inspirational to Monaye that she locked herself away with his words and emerged with a song that truly captures what it feels like for these men and women when they come home after serving their country. Through a series of connections, Finally Home caught the attention of the Obama administration, as well as, various armed forces and veteran s oganizations who have offered their full support. Monaye joined forces with Producer Pepe Willie, signing with his label, Reo Deo in 2013. Finally Home, the first single release from her upcoming album, will be released September 10, 2013. In the words of Monaye... One day I asked my husband (Eric) how he felt when he was over in Iraq. He said you have no idea... why do you ask? I told him I was so proud and honored to be the wife of an Air National Guardsman and I wanted to thank him in my own special way. I asked him to write it all down. He told me he shed a few tears while writing, just thinking about all that he went through while he was there. I told him I may not understand completely, but I felt his heart. That s how Finally Home was born. In the words of Eric... When I listened to Monaye s song, I couldn t believe what I was hearing. It brought me to a place in my life that I could never forget. When I was in the military, in the field lying in the dirt thinking of my daughter and wife back home, that was my motivation to get through all the stress while serving my country. At that moment I was frozen listening to her song. Tears started to fall from my eyes and I didn t care who saw my expression of joy. I told her that she had a gift and a hit song that the world needed to hear. Hear Monaye perform Finally Home and watch her powerful video This song brought tears to my eyes. I am a Vietnam Vet from the Marine Corps and Retired Air Force... the brotherhood we form with others while in combat will never compare to the love and support we receive from our family.
