ADEA Endodontic Section 2012-2013Annual Report ADEA Section: Endodontics Submitted by: Bruce C. Justman, Councilor Email Address for questions: bruce-justman@uiowa.edu Section Activities: The Endodontic Section and the section officers again had a very busy and productive year. The 2012-2013 year continued with strong leadership from Drs. Aminoshariae, Fleisher and Nair. Having the continuity and experience of two officers was a great benefit to the section. They were able to provide better assistance and explanation to the incoming secretary Dr. Nair. Dr. Justman served as section councilor for a fourth year and has helped with transitions and assures quality programming and officers for the section. We owe much gratitude to Dr. Anita Aminoshariae and Dr. Laurie Fleisher. The Endodontic Section sponsored a very successful 2013 ADEA Annual Session section program in Seattle. The program was entitled CBCT in Endodontics and Oral Surgery: changing the landscape of Diagnosis and Clinical Treatment and was presented by Drs. Frederic Barnett and Martin Steed. They provided a wide variety of information from Einstein Medical Center and Emory University hospital Medical Center. This was a co-sponsored program by the Endodontic Section and the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Anesthesia/Hospital Dentistry Section. Dr. Laurie Fleisher was successful in obtaining funding ($850) for the Education program from the Section Program Fund. There were 126 in attendance for the educational program. The Endodontic Section members Forum was held earlier in the day on Monday March 18, 2013. Attendance was not as good during the member s forum partially due to the early hour of the meeting and the fact that it was not scheduled closely with the educational program. Despite this, there were 22 members in attendance. Dr. William T. Johnson, immediate past president AAE, presented the report of the AAE to the members in the absence of Dr. James Kulild, AAE President. Dr. Kulild was attending another meeting at the ADEA Annual Session and could not attend the member s forum. Two candidates presented as nominees for the position of section secretary. They were Dr. Tom Montagnese from Case Western and Dr. Mary Pettiette from University of North Carolina. Each presented a short speech and a ballot election was conducted. Dr. Pettiette was elected as secretary of the Endodontic Section of ADEA. Current Officers: Bruce C. Justman, D.D.S., Councilor Laurie R. Fleisher, D.M.D., Chair-elect Umadevi P Nair, D.M.D., Secretary Mary T. Pettiette, D.M.D., Secretary The Endodontic Section participated actively in the ADEA Virtual Career Fair for Postgraduate Dental Programs held February 2, 2013. The Endodontic Booth was staffed by Drs. Laurie Fleisher (NYU), Craig Hirschberg (UMDNJ), Roberta Pileggi (UF), Uma Nair (UF) and Bruce Justman (U of Iowa). The booth
had over 100 visits with the highest percentage being live online chats. Several questions came from Foreign Trained Dentists about getting admission into Endodontic Programs in the US. Our section has agreed that it was a positive experience and plans active participation again next year. During the 2013 AAE Annual Session in Honolulu, HI, a business meeting was held prior to the Educator s Forum CE Session. The majority of the Endodontic Section officers were present and they were introduced by Dr. Anita Aminoshariae, Chair. The activities of ADEA and the Endodontic Section were presented. Discussion was open regarding the Endodontic Section program submission of program topics for the 2014 ADEA Annual Session and the COS Program Fund. AAE members that are involved in education were encouraged to become members of ADEA if they had not already done so. The method to opt into Listserv was presented so that members can actively participate in the section Listserv. There was some discussion why it was not automatic to be on the Listserv. It was explained that according to rules and regulations, a member must actively consent to be on the email lists. The educational session following the business meeting presented for Endodontic Educators were entitled Clinical Teaching in the Undergraduate Clinic and How Do Our Students Learn both presented by Dr. Lorne Chapnick. The culminating project of the past year was the formulation and submission of a program proposal for the 2014 ADEA Annual Session and submitting a request for funding from the Council of Sections Program Fund. It was discovered that since the section received funding for the 2013 educational session, we are not eligible for funding in 2014. After discussion, it was decided to still submit a program proposal and then use section funds from Endodontics and Pediatric Dentistry for expenses if needed. The submitted program is entitled Pulpal Regeneration: The Science, Evidence and Clinical Application. This proposal is co-sponsored with the ADEA Section on Pediatric Dentistry. The proposed speakers are Dr. Anibal R. Diogenes from the University of Texas health Science Center at San Antonio, and Dr. James D. Johnson from the University of Washington. The section is awaiting acceptance by the Program Fund Review Committee and the ADEA Board.
