Safe Circumcision: New Toolkit for Demand Creation with 1-day training programme Email: mmc@boht.org Tel: +27 (0)83 539 9181 Website: www.boht.org Effective Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) programmes require: 1. Accessible, efficient, safe and cost-effective clinical services to carry out the MMC procedure. 2. Mobilizing and motivating men to access these services. This new MMC Mobilizer Toolkit focuses on the second requirement: demand creation. It uses an innovative participatory training methodology and interactive materials derived from the 3-times global award winning Bridges of Hope Training Programme. It has been pioneered and evaluated very positively in a programme throughout South Africa managed by CareWorks, supported by PEPFAR and CDC. An Abstract about this Toolkit has been accepted for Poster Presentation on 10 th December at ICASA (www.icasa2013southafrica.org). The toolkit is offered with a 1-day programme including training on how to use it most effectively and adapt it for different contexts and programmes. This is scheduled the day after ICASA finishes: 1-day training programme in Cape Town: Thursday 12 th December 2013 09h00 to 17h00 at Roodenburg House, Rondebosch, Cape Town see www.roodenburghouse.co.za Registration / Coffee from 08h30 Who for? Anyone whose work includes explaining or motivating for Medical Male Circumcision, including community mobilizers, peer educators, trainers, facilitators, health workers, programme managers and co-ordinators for HIVprevention and VMMC programmes. Toolkit Contents The toolkit includes: 10 innovative participatory training activities. These activities attract and engage people and create learning experiences which participants can apply practically to their issues around health and HIVprevention including MMC. A MMC demonstration model developed in consultation with CHAPS (Centre for HIV and AIDS Preventions Studies). See next page. An illustrated, simple-to-follow facilitator s guide. Other physical materials (e.g. stick bridges and laminated cards as illustrated) to run all the activities. A purpose designed and branded toolkit bag to carry all items above. Trying to balance on the bridges of HIV prevention, to reach the island (life goals and dreams). If he falls off into the water, the MMC shield provides partial protection from the HIV crocodile.
MMC Model Mini-Kit The MMC demonstration model (part of the MMC Mobiliser Toolkit) with 2-colour retractable foreskin is also offered separately without training in a mini-kit with illustrated facilitation notes. This is definitely the best model I have seen for demonstrating and explaining medical male circumcision and its benefits. Dr Dirk Taljaard, Chief Executive Officer, CHAPS (Centre for HIV and AIDS Preventions Studies) It has also been used by CHAPS for medical staff to practice the MMC procedure (replacement foreskin sheaths available for this purpose.) In schools, businesses, taxi ranks, train and bus stations, markets & shopping centres, on the street, youth groups, door-to-door outreach and clinics. What Mobilizers using the Toolkit say about it An evaluative review by CareWorks in August 2013 included the following written feedback from their community mobilizers throughout South Africa: It s a wonderful and a user friendly kit. Mobilizer in KwaZulu-Natal (Umkhanyakude / Uthungulu) The impact is very good because the toolkit opens the people s minds. It makes my work in the field easy. Mobilizer in KwaZulu-Natal (Umkhanyakude / Uthungulu) It was very exciting for the people to see and to experience what the toolkit is about. They were very positive after the demonstration. Mobilizer in Eastern Cape In areas such as shopping malls, in street corners the toolkit has been very useful in attracting the passer-bys attention and getting them to participate and give time to listen to what we have to give or say. Mobilizer in Western Cape We used it in a school in Hout Bay to boys in grade 10 & 11. It had a huge impact because after using the toolkit they had a better vision of what we were talking about.
