3 Introduction Welcome to the 2012 Training Prospectus and Parent Support Groups Schedule for. We hope you are able to find the support you need to help you in your role in assisting and caring for children, young people and adults who have additional needs. As a parent led organization not only do we work closely with parents as a support mechanism but we have parents on our Directors Board to continuously inform and shape the services we provide. Our aim in training is to provide the theory and practical solutions to best meet the needs of the carers and professionals who in turn support people with additional needs. Our training is delivered by experienced staff who are qualified in the area of training which they provide. Trainers also have an active role in supporting parents and young people. Parent Directors at are involved at National level with the Governments ongoing development of Early Support, a national programme to improve the way that services work with children, young people and families with additional needs 3

4 Meet the Trainers and Facilitators Julie Keen Training and Development Manager I am a qualified trainer and actively involved in developing the services available from. I have a background in support with over 15 years experience in training parents, carers and professionals by raising awareness of autism and additional needs, delivering to both the statutory and independent sector. Having worked in the NHS and Voluntary Sector I have firsthand experience in working in partnership with parents and continue to facilitate parent support groups. Through I aim to continue to address the identified needs of parents, carers and young people towards accessing and living fully inclusive lives. Nikki Reeves and Lisa Hunt Early Support Parent Trainers Together we bring a wealth of personal experience to. Nikki has a son with Downs Syndrome and Lisa has a son with Autism. This gives us vital insight and enables us to offer support to families in similar situations. We also have a lot of professional experience having both worked as Parent Champions for Solihull MBC through the DCATCH project before joining. We facilitate several parent support groups within Solihull. In addition to this we are both qualified trainers of Early Support and will play a pivotal role in the on-going development of Early Support materials. Tony Ibbotson Project Lead I am an administrator and project lead for, having previously volunteered in a similar role for six months. I have a background in administration and customer services, having worked for many years for multi-national companies. I then worked for Solihull MBC as the administrator on the DCATCH programme, a Government funded initiative aimed at improving disabled children s access to childcare. Working with forty projects allowed me to see the difference that could be made to families and individuals if the right support mechanisms, information and training are in place. This is just one of the gaps in provision that hopes to fill! As well as my work with, I am also a support worker, assisting young people and adults who have additional needs to access activities in the community and supporting them to learn life skills. 4

5 SIGNPOST INCLUSION PARENT SUPPORT GROUPS Would you like to meet other parents who have children with additional needs? holds regular drop in parent support groups, specifically for parents who have children with additional needs. The groups are run by parents and carers who understand what you re going through. We provide you with an opportunity to spend time with other people who share your experience. Parents meet in a relaxed and friendly setting to share ideas and offer emotional and practical support to each other, often forming friendships along the way. Moms and Dads are welcome to attend with or without your child and siblings up to the age of 5 are also welcome. The groups are held, during term time, in the following locations / days / times Bentley Heath Children s Centre Monday am Langley Children s Centre Tuesday am Chelmsley Wood Children s Centre Wednesday am We also organise fun play and stay sessions during some school holidays. 6 Who the course is for: Understanding Your Child s ASC For parents, carers or other family members who have received / or awaiting a diagnosis of ASC for their child Programme: What is ASC? Social skills/communication skills Anxiety/ Rigidity and special interests. Behavioural issues and ASC Sensory issues The course can be delivered over 1 day (please bring own lunch) or 4 evening sessions Course costs: 20 to include workbook Day dates: 9.30am 3 pm Wednesday 18 th January Thursday 16 th February Friday 16 th March Wednesday 16 th May Thursday 14 th June Friday 19 TH October Wednesday 14 th November Evening dates: 6pm 8pm April: Wednesdays 4th, 11 th, 18 th, 25 th September: Thursdays 6 th, 13 th, 20 th, 27 th Venue: The FIRB, Langley Primary School, B92 7DJ (Parking is restricted, but arrangements can be made for nearby parking please contact for details) 6

7 Introductory awareness of Autistic Spectrum Conditions Certification of this unit for QCF through OCN is available for this course. Who the course is for: Anyone working in a supporting role, who would like to develop their understanding of autism through theory and practical interventions. Programme To introduce the defining characteristics of autistic spectrum conditions To explore the possible implications of impairments in communication, social interaction, thought processing and sensory perception Participate in activities based on course content and work placement To understand the importance of appropriate support for people with autistic spectrum conditions. Learning Outcomes Understand the areas in which individuals with an autistic spectrum condition characteristically have difficulties Understand the concept of autism as a spectrum and the implications for variation on the capacities and needs of individuals Understand the behaviours exhibited by some individuals with an autistic spectrum condition. Course times: pm (please bring packed lunch) drinks will be provided Costs: 40 per person (additional 30 for OCN registration) Dates: Wednesday 28 th March Thursday 26 th April Friday 25 th May Wednesday 27 th June Thursday 27 th September Friday 26 th October Venue: The FIRB, Langley Primary School, B92 7DJ. 8 Supporting the Individual with ASC Who the course is for: Anyone working in a supporting role who would like to develop their understanding of autism through addressing challenges presented by the individual they support. Programme: To recap on the Triad of Impairments and sensory perceptions Identify challenges and identify triggers to behaviours Identify indicators which precede behaviours Develop a personalized pen picture Explore interventions to support the individual with ASC Learning Outcomes: To be able to identify the differing factors which may cause anxiety to the individual with ASC To be aware of indicators presented which precede behaviours To be able to create a pen picture which can be used with others to promote continuity of support. 9 SIGNALONG Signalong empowers children and adults with impaired communication to understand and express their needs, choices and desires by providing sign vocabulary for life and learning. Who the course is for: For staff and family members who would like to develop their communication skills through the use of signs to help children and adults with additional needs process verbal language. Programme: Explore the SIGNALONG philosophy Explore the principles of signing Create hand shapes which form the signs Practice signing sentences Learning Outcomes: To understand why signing is useful for anyone with a learning disability To be able to create a sign by understanding hand shapes and movements To have the skills to sign and how to interpret signs in any of the SIGNALONG manuals Course Times: pm (please bring packed lunch) drinks will be provided Costs: 40 per person (an additional 5 if a SIGNALONG certificate is required) Dates: Thursday 19 th April Friday 11 th May Wednesday 20 th June Friday 13 th September Wednesday 17 th October Thursday 22 nd November Friday 14 th December Venue: The FIRB, Langley Primary School, B92 7DJ. 10 Early Support Parent Workshops The Early Support Parent Workshops are specifically designed for families of children with disabilities/additional needs. Who the workshops are for? The workshops are for parents and other family members who care for children and young people who have additional needs. They have been written by parent consultants who have direct experience of a disabled child in the family, and are led by parents of disabled children. Programme: 1. Understanding this new world 2. Changing relationships 3. The child beyond the disability 4. The importance of the ordinary 5. An additional 5 th day offers you individual time to talk with the trainers. Learning Outcomes: Helps parents understand Early Support and how the materials can help. Gives parents skills and confidence to work with the professionals involved in their child s care Guides parents to the services available both locally and nationally and how to use them. Helps deal with many of the emotional issues that often arise for families with disabled children. Workshops will be run by two parents from, Nikki Reeves and Lisa Hunt and will be held on the following dates: Dates: 26 th April, 3 rd, 10 th, 17 th, 24 th May between 0930 and 2.30pm Venue: Castle Bromwich Children s centre, Hurst Lane, B36 0BX. There is no parking directly outside the centre or on the Library car park, however you can park on Hurst Lane. Drinks will be provided, please bring your own lunch.
