Black Forest Community Club Newsletter March 2018 Everyone is Family in the Forest Schedule of BFCC Events: Mar 22 Thursday 6:30 PM Board & General Meeting / All Welcome Mar 25 Sunday 2:30 PM Kicks Big Band Mar 25 Sunday 5:00 PM Corned Beef Potluck Dinner Apr 4 Wednesday 9:00 AM Let s Clean Up the Building Reminder: BFCC Officers and General Meetings will continue to be held on the 4th Thursday of each month at 6:30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings. However, there are some exceptions on dates due to the holidays in November and December. Valentine s Day Social was Fun Event Jessie Springer arranged to have a musician for our entertainment at the Dessert Social in February. Lawrence Shiroma performed a wonderful set of familiar songs that fit the occasion. His voice and his guitar were a very pleasant reminder how nice it is to have live music at our events. You can visit this link to hear his songs and he is available for hire: https://www.youtube.com/user/lawrenceyoshito And all the wonderful desserts provided by those who attended were well appreciated. Enough for everyone to take some home. We had ribbons for the best desserts but the contest got lost in the enjoyment of the evening. If you have sources of entertainment, let me know. (495-3127) 1

Free Concert NHBCOS Kicks Big Band Sunday, March 25 th @ 2:30 PM (Jeff Ader, our faithful BFCC scheduler, has arranged for another wonderful live music event at the community center.) The Black Forest Community Club presents the NHBCOS Kicks Big Band in performance. (New Horizons Band of Colorado Springs.) The concert will start at 2:30 p.m. at the BFCC and will last approximately 90 minutes. The Kicks group is rapidly becoming one of the Pikes Peak regions favorite jazz groups under the direction of Dr. Tom Fowler and will re-appear to anchor our Black Forest Summer Jazz Series in June. Come and listen to old and new favorites as you enjoy arrangements by Sammy Nestico, Gordon Goodwin, Bruce Thompson and others. Admission is free so please don t miss this opportunity to hear some great jazz and support the community club with your voluntary donation. See you there!!! Then.Corned Beef Potluck Dinner at 5pm of the same afternoon Instead of celebrating St. Pat s Day on March 17, music and dinner will be combined on the same day (March 25) so fix your dish early and bring it with you (or hustle back home to pick it up while the other poor suckers put away the chairs from the concert and set up tables for dinner). Bring your green beer if you like. 2

2018 Elections of Officers and Board (left to right; photo courtesy of Chuck Lidderdale) Leif Garrison Don Root Jack Ferguson Dan Hagmaier Dianne Hagmaier Rob Conley Janet Fortner Chairman of the Board Board member Newly elected board member Treasurer President Newly elected vice president Secretary Looks like a perp line-up but these are the brave guys and gals that help to keep the BFCC functioning. Be sure to thank them for their time and work. They spend a lot of time each month sorting out BFCC needs. Community Club Hosted Retreat Work is being done on the possibilities that came out of the retreat. Chris Bailey created a great Power Point presentation that covers a lot of ideas pertinent to the lifestyle of the Black Forest. After Chuck Lidderdale presented some of this at the last board meeting, it was agreed that a committee of Chris and Chuck and Don Root would work together and have something to present to the board at the May meeting. While they are working on that area, these needs for chairmen and volunteers to fill the committees are still there. This is your chance to get involved and make a difference in this important entity of the Black Forest. Property Maintenance Committee Building Management Committee Publicity Membership Committee Land Use Committee Keeper of the Forest Committee Transportation Committee Programs Welcome Wagon type of volunteer Lawn Care Elbow Grease for occasional work day More helpers. More helpers. Terry Stokka Chairman So, if you see something that you want to do, let someone know. A board member may hug your neck and you will truly be appreciated. Come to the next board meeting or call Carolyn at 495-3127. 3

Comment & Link from Chuck Lidderdale Back in 2000 on a Friday we got off work and went out to dinner. Nothing special, just end of the week, go out to eat. We got home about 7 PM and - OMG! HS! %*%*$&**&(* the house had been trashed - every door was open, every drawer was dumped on the floor. In and out in 3 minutes. Cash, jewelry, computer software, 2 rolling suitcases were used to make off with OUR THINGS. On Feb. 22 this year the house across from our Carolyn had the same thing happen. And that is only 1 of 6 from the first of this year (1 every 10 days). The only thing to deter them is the fear of being caught - well a moat, gators, guard towers, a pack of unfed Dobermans... 6 ft chain link w barbed wire - but that keeps the deer, fox, rabbits, bear, etc out - hmmm. So what can you do? Well, if you're home it won't happen - but then there's work, the store, the movies. Lights on timers, video cameras, a big dog. But not to worry, you're not on this list: https://blackforest-co.com/crime/ (Editor s note: This link gives you criminal activity in our area that Chuck obtains from the Sheriff s blotter.) Black Forest Chorus Announcement If you like to sing or if you have a venue for the Black Forest Chorus to perform, please read the note below. Hi, I'm Sharlene Law, the director of The Black Forest Chorus. I'd like to get everyone's attention that likes to sing. But especially TENORS. Our favorite tenor Bill Otto has finally retired from our group at age 88, leaving us tenor-less. So this is a plea for all of you tenors to step up and come sing with us. "When do we practice," You ask? Mondays from 6:00 to 7:15 or sometimes 7:30 when we are getting ready for a program. We are a very casual group, and we all contribute ideas of what to sing. (Just a note: We take a break during January. So no practice till February.) That brings me to my second point. We would like to sing at different venues, but we don't always know who to ask. If you are interested in having us come and sing at your group, meeting or party, please let me know. You can contact me at 205-5675. See you soon! 4
