Stress 101
A cell cannot be in a state of growth and defense at the same time Bruce Lipton
Every stress leaves a scar, and the organism pays for its survival after a stressful situation by becoming a little older. ~ Hans Salye
The Stress Response
what is Stress? Stress refers to anything that disturbs an individual s physical, emotional, or mental balance. The body has numerous stress response mechanisms and stress can affect the body in many different ways. Stress can affect each individual differently. Stress can cause a headache for one person and digestive troubles for another. We must realize that not all stress is bad, it is a normal part of life. What really matters is how much stress, what kind of stress, and ultimately, how each individual handles stress.
the 3 types of stress Mental/Emotional Chemical Physical
Every system in your body defines stress differently: chronic pain creates stress to the nervous system. chronic inflammation creates stress for the cardiovascular system and so forth. Therefore stress can also be defined as anything that creates a disruption in the body

Stress and Disease Stress can affect any part of the body and produce physical and emotional symptoms. Studies report that 70-85% of all diseases have stress related factors. The following slides are a few examples
Ulcerative Colitis Long term stress increases the risk of ulcerative colitis flare ups Studies have found that long term stress as opposed to short term stress tripled the risk of flare ups.
Stress and Heart Disease Evidence from studies indicate that cardiovascular response to stress is a risk factor to the same magnitude as smoking, hypertension, insulin resistance and elevated cholesterol. Frequent and prolonged periods of elevated blood pressure during mental stress may promote mechanical injury to the lining or cause release of hormones that can promote the buildup of plaque. Circulation Vol. 96, No 11: pp 3842-3848
Stress and Diabetes One of undesirable effects of chronic stress is that it contributes to insulin resistance. (Cortisol) This can lead to diabetes. Journal of Clinical Endocrinology 54 (1982) pp 131-138

The Stress Hormones
Elevates heart rate Adenaline (Epinepherine) Increases blood pressure Increases cardiac output (work effort) Increases blood flow to skeletal muscle Increases sugar breakdown in the liver, elevates blood sugar levels Elevates cholesterol and fatty acids in the blood Decreases muscle building
Nor Adrenaline (Nor Epinepherine) Constricts smooth muscle in blood vessels thus raising blood pressure Shuts down the flow of blood to the digestive system
Cortisol Acts as an anti-inflammatory Decreases uptake of sugar from the blood stream Increases the risk of developing diabetes Breaks down fat in the arms and legs increases fat stores in the trunk Causing an apple shaped body, fat around the waist Shuts down the immune system to conserve energy Increases the risk of infection and impairs immune function
The Effects of Cortisol Decreases bone formation causing osteopenia Impairs proper sleep and energy patterns Slows down digestion Causing gas, bloating, heartburn, IBS etc Increases sodium retention high blood pressure Depletes Magnesium, Zinc, Glutamine, carnitine
Inducers of Cortisol Release Cortisol ACTH Poor Sugar Handling tissue damage Pain/inflammation Toxins Sympathetic Overflow Mental and Emotional Stress
Cortisol Rhythm
DHEA The hormone of youth Levels decline with age Levels decline with chronic stress Pre-cursor to all sex hormones By-product of cholesterol synthesis

Adrenal Testing
Stress Screening Test the first is called the Ragland s test This is a simple test to check the function of these glands by taking a person s blood pressure sitting and then standing
Ragland s Test The doctor has you lie on your back for 5 minutes, then takes your blood pressure Leaving the blood pressure cuff in place, you stand up and immediately have your blood pressure taken again Your blood pressure should rise 15 points or more If it is below this or below the original blood pressure amount, it is indicative of a serious adrenal problem.
