Fairfax Lions Club News - July 2018 "Bob Stahl Memorial Newsletter" Monthly Resolution: "Leave this world a little better than you found it"... Robert Baden-Powell, founder of world scouting. New Club President s Message As your new King Lion, I wish to thank you for allowing me to assume this very important role. I take this responsibility very seriously. I have twelve years of Lions Service which includes being your District Governor (2015-2016). As a previous King Lion, with another club, I hope to build on my previous knowledge in this capacity. When I was District Governor, my motto was TOGETHER WE WILL SUCCEED. I truly believe in this motto and believe that together there is no mountain too high that we can't climb together. My successes are YOUR successes. While we continue to grow very slowly in membership, we also continue to lose members through a variety of ways. We also are getting older and younger Lions would greatly help our club with our projects. Sometimes there are individuals right in front of us whom we should be considering for membership. Previous LCI Presidents have asked us to consider members from our own families such as our spouse, children, relatives and friends, etc. We should also consider individuals with whom we volunteer outside of Lionism. There are many volunteers who may be good candidates for our club. Invite them to a dinner meeting for us to meet them. Remember, in order for someone to become a Lion, they need to receive an invitation I wish to thank the outgoing Board of Directors and look forward to working with the new Board. I am open to change in order to help us move forward. I have always had an open door policy with the people whom I have worked with in the past. You will find that I am very accessible and look forward to a one-on-one with anyone of you. Any idea is important as there is NO bad idea. A single idea could be the basis for developing an ever greater idea or plan. Remember each of you brings to our club your own special talents and interests. If you have not attended a dinner meeting in awhile, I hope that you will consider doing so. Family is always first. As we begin this new Lions year, let's come together and make our club even better than it is. We will continue to reach out and work with our community to address their needs. Yes, WE SERVE to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Yours in Lions Service, Lion Karen Udell Parker, PDG Report from Immediate Past President As your outgoing President, I want to give a very special thank you to all members of Fairfax Host Lions Club. It has been, with your help, another fantastic year. We have met or exceeded an important strategic goal by growing in numbers (now up to 49 with two transfers in process). Our fund-raising activities were phenomenal in

terms of the money raised for our charities. The total amount was well above our planned amount. That allowed us to fully fund all of our charities and still have significant funds remaining that can be applied to our 2018-2019 charities. The charities we fund and support are very important in our community, in Northern Virginia, and around the world. We actively support children, families, veterans, the homeless and poor, and seniors. We continue our generous support of an array of activities and charities that focus on vision and blindness, hearing, diabetes, reading (blind and poor children), music (Bland), art (Peace Poster), horse therapy for the handicapped, the local environment, and an incredible youth camp. Our support for LCIF impacts critical funding worldwide for things like disaster relief and eradicating measles, most of which is accomplished with partnerships and direct grants to clubs/districts. I am so pleased and thankful that there were a number of you who can always be depended upon when activity/event leads needed help. And I don t want to forget the behind the scenes Lions who do a lot of mostly unseen but very important things for our club. Some special club accomplishments this last year included: Transitioning several key activities/events to new leads. Transforming the storage shed by hauling away equipment and materials that hadn t been used in years and reorganizing so that we can now easily access and find things. Continuation of a focused effort to make dinner meetings more interesting and fun. Active participation in the International Convention, State Convention, U.S./Canada Lions Leadership Forum, Lions Leadership Institute, and various district conferences and meetings. I became King Lion with some trepidation. I didn t have full understanding of what I was supposed to do and when I was supposed to do it. Several Lions came forward and provided documentation and on-going guidance and help. I maintained that documentation and passed it to our new President and 1 st Vice President. Hopefully, this will get easier if we all continue to support one another in helpful, non-critical ways. Even the OneDrive shared online storage mostly used by the Board has been reorganized and populated with a lot of how to information and responsibilities, processes, planning, Constitution and By-laws, 501(c)3 for Charities and 501(c)4 for club, state sales tax exemption, city license to solicit funds and raise money, policies, dinner meeting programs, agendas, minutes, checklists, permits, and much more. This really helps our club be successful because we can easily go back and refer to whatever was done in the past if we aren t sure about something. It s GREAT TO BE A LION! Together we serve. Best wishes to new King Lion, Karen. Immediate Past President Marty Lockard Service - Our Mission June 11 Vision and Hearing Screening by IPP Marty Lockard Fairfax Lions provided vision and hearing screenings to nine adults on Monday, June 11. It was done at one of two large group homes in the City of Fairfax set up to help homeless men. The screenings were requested by FACETSCARES, which is a part of FACETS. FACETS is a wellestablished nonprofit organization that touches and improves the lives of thousands of families and individuals every year. They open doors by helping people meet their emergency shelter, food, and medical needs, helping them gain safe, sustainable and permanent housing, and working with them to end the cycle of poverty through educational, life skills and career counseling programs. Their multidisciplinary professional staff manages a comprehensive range of programs and services and a volunteer base of several thousand. As a founding and active partner in the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Partnership to Prevent and End Homelessness, FACETS is committed to working collaboratively in the county-wide effort to help our neighbors in need of safe and affordable housing. FACETS has a close working partnership with The Lamb Center. Lions Ron Zabel, Karen Habitzreuther, and Marty Lockard teamed up with Lion Tom Melgaard, one of the Technicians assigned to the two Lions Sight & Hearing Vans. For such a small group, it wasn t practical to use a van. Tom only brought a SPOT, printer, and audiometer. Four Lions with Several Screening Clients We split up and scanned some interesting and entertaining men. Of the nine vision scans, five (56%) were referred for a complete eye exam by a professional eye doctor. One of these was referred because of concerns

about anomalies in the screening and suspected eye damage or some other serious eye condition. Of the eight hearing screens, three (38%) were referred for a complete hearing exam. FHLC Lions worked a combined total of 4.5 hours on this service activity. Lions Reading Action Program by Chair, Lion Marilyn Tanner This is the second year the Fairfax Lions have participated in the Lions Reading Action Program (LRAP). LRAP s primary goal is to improve the reading literacy of young children. Lion supporter, Marcia Selva, proposed that we provide this year s LRAP books to children who attend the Main Street Child Development Center (CDC), located in the City of Fairfax. Education Director, Susan Rismiller, manages the youth library at the center and told us that many of the children in the program have no books at home. Ms. Rismiller provided us with a list of 25 stimulating book titles such as: I Hear a Pickle, Shake a Leg, Egg!, There s a Bear on My Chair, and Walk By the Ocean, just to name a few. A total of 98 books were purchased from Barnes and Noble, at a special discount rate. A sampling of the books purchased this year was on display at the June 19 dinner meeting. Each book has a sticker that identifies it as being contributed by the Fairfax Lions Club. Sample of Books Provided to Children at Main Street Child Development Center On June 28, King Lion Marty Lockard and Lion Marilyn Tanner delivered the much-needed books to the CDC, with the hope that they will go home with the students to start their personal home library. Fund Raising - Underpinning Our Service Mission July 4th Food Booth by Event Chair, Lion Ken Schutz We had a strong turnout of Lions, as usual. Fifteen Lions worked the event. Thanks to all for the great show of support. A summary is shown below of our net revenue (amount added to our club charity account) at the July 4th parade this year follows, compared with previous years. 2015 2016 2017 2018 $ 332 $ 558 $ 465 $ 493 I think results in hot dog sales was negatively affected by the high heat and temperature. Parade attendance was below usual numbers and many attendees left early. That being said, our results were not substantially different from recent years. In terms of charity finds raised, this fund raiser does not compare to our citrus sales. But, it definitely allows us the opportunity to meet community neighbors and talk about what we do in our service mission. Vehicle Donation Program by Chair, Lion Ken Schutz Below is a report of the Vehicle Donation Program for the Lions year 2017-18. Note that there was a donation on June 21 that has not yet been processed and sold. The meal featured steak, salmon, and chicken along with rice and green beans. A cake was provided in honor of Lion Bill and Sarah Bartlett s 55th wedding anniversary. Lion Harry Parker will soon transfer Lion membership to Fairfax. He initially won a plurality of votes against one other candidate at the Virginia State Lions Convention. However, he did not win support from a majority in the second round and was therefore not approved as a candidate for International Director from Virginia.

A Georgia Colonel award was presented to King Lion Marty Lockard by Lion Bill Bartlett. IPP Marty Lockard is made an Honorary GA Colonel Not in attendance were these 2018-2019 Board Members: Lion Bill Smith (Director Emeritus), Lion Ken Schutz (Membership Director), Lion Gordon Tillery (Bulletin Editor), and Lion Mike Greeley (Corresponding Secretary). Lion Bill Bartlett also inducted Lion Diane Druyor into the club. She is retired and volunteers and works at Fair Oaks Hospital. She was married for 49 years, and has two sons and two grandchildren. The next annual Charter night has been set for April 7, 2019 (Sunday). Recent Vision and Hearing Screening was provided to Facets (homeless support) in Fairfax with a record 55% referred to eye doctors for treatment. The board increased the annual contribution to Sprout (therapeutic horse-riding center) from $500 to $1000. Lions officially installed to the Fairfax Board of Directors by Lion Bill Bartlett were as follows: Lions Joe Breda and Karen Habitzreuther as Directors, Lion Cory Green as Lion Tamer, Lion Marilyn Tanner as Tail Twister, Lion Rob Higginbotham as Treasurer, Lion Jeff Root as Secretary, Lion Mike Rumberg as 1st Vice President, Lion Marty Lockard as Immediate Past President, and Lion Karen Parker as President. New Lion Diane Druyor Inducted The family of the late Lion Bill Trent has contributed $1000 to the club, as reported by Lion Pete Conklin. Ninety-eight books were purchased by the club to be distributed to children ages 2 to 7 who do not have books at home via the Green Acres Center in Fairfax. Lion Jim Davis encouraged Lions and friends to visit Lion Elden Wright as he is anxious to have conversation. July 3rd No meeting - due to July 4th Food Booth fund raiser. Board Meeting Your Board of Directors met on June 26th. PCC Bill Bartlett Installs Lion Karen Parker as King Lion, and Mike Rumberg as 1st VP Upcoming Events July 17 - Dinner Meeting July 19 - SERVICE: Eyeglass Recycling July 19 - SERVICE: Call Bingo at Nursing Center July 24 - Board Meeting

New Member Orientation by Lion Ken Schutz The Board of Directors approved the membership application for Diane Druyor. I am sure many of you have met Diane during her 3 visits to the club. She will be a great addition to our membership. She is an experienced volunteer, having worked for many years as a volunteer at Fair Oaks Hospital. We held an orientation for Diane on Saturday June 16 at 8:30am at the American Legion. Ten persons attended, and membership chair Lion Ken oriented prospective Lion Diane on Lionism and our Club's operations. From left: PCC Harry Parker's arm, Lion Jeff Root, Diane Druyor, PCC Bill Bartlett, Lions Phil Mayo, Ken Schutz, and Mike Schutz. Not shown: KL Marty Lockard, PDG Karen Parker, and Gordon Tillery. One of the items discussed in the orientation was the new Lions organizational structure where our club resides. For your information, it is shown at the very end of this newsletter.
