THE BENT TWIG A monthly newsletter of the American Bonsai Association of Sacramento February 2019 Tuesday February 26 ABAS Presents John Thompson This month we have special guest John Thompson (JT) giving us a demonstration and discussion on Oaks (Quercus). This is John s favorite topic and promises to be an entertaining and educational evening. Here s a picture of John and another of the oak he will be working on for our raffle at the end of the meeting. We ve renamed our Pre-Meeting Session to Bonsai Q&A which this month will feature Bob Bugay showing us how to choose the right pot for your tree. Bob will cover the do s and don ts when it comes to trees and pots. Bring in your trees for suggestions. Bonsai Q&A will get underway at 6:00 before the regular meeting at 7:00.

For Show & Tell bring in your JT trees, early blooms and winter silhouettes. At our last meeting Tuesday January 22 Kathy Shaner was our distinguished guest and presenter at our last meeting and Pre-Meeting. She was kind enough to bring in several bags of tools, sharpening stones and other implements needed to properly care for your tools. There was something for everyone to learn from her extensive knowledge on the subject. She even tended to several members who had brought in their tools for discussion. We finished off the evening with a discussion on a pair of Lodgepole Pines from Don Casselman s collection that were raffled off to the lucky winner. We used the Garden Center s new video equipment combined with Renee s phone to show live video of Kathy s Tool Demo, what a difference that makes. We ll look forward to refining this benefit for future up close demo s. Here are some pictures of the evening:

Our Board for 2018-2019 President Renee Seely Vice President Kathleen O Donnell Treasurer Sylvia Anderson Recording Secretary John Cota Corresponding Secretary Mark Mendenhall Members at Large Lex Powell, Marty Baumann, Dodie Newman, Timm Johnson Club News and Announcements: Pine Workshop led by Phong Nguyen The second class for the 3 part pine workshop is in the books. Here are a couple pictures of the event.

Garden Center Japanese Garden Facelift Four Board members spent the morning of February 12 th giving the Japanese Garden in the Garden Center Courtyard a major facelift. John had spent several hours before that pruning the large Mugo Pine, Thanks to John, Sylvia, Marty and Renee for their expert help and time toward this activity. It looks great!! Burglary at Maruyama s! We are saddened to announce a recent theft at Maruyama s Nursery around January 31. Approximately 20 trees were stolen using a U-Haul Trailer. This hurts all of us in the Bonsai Community. Here are a couple pictures of trees that were stolen.

2019 Dues are Overdue Our annual dues keep our club and excellent programs going for another year. We have greatly increased guest appearances at our meetings for 2019. Your dues also support, better demo trees, workshops, bus trips, quality raffles, the list goes on. Sylvia will be at the February Meeting to register all new and returning members for another year. Cash, check and card are all welcome. Dues are $40 per family or individual and $25 for students. Club Shirts Have been ordered and we hope to have them for the February Meeting. We ll put together another order later in the year for those that want a 2 nd shirt or missed the first order. Thank you Dodie for putting this package together for us. Spring Bus Tour Saturday March 23 Our trip includes stops to purchase material or supplies at Bonchi Bonsai, Japanese Maples Momiji Nursery, Lone Pine Nursery and the Bay Area Bonsai Association Show and consignment sales. We will also enjoy private tours of Lake Merritt Bonsai Garden and Hideko Metaxas' private garden* (*not handicap accessible). The bus ride will include light snacks and drinks, raffle prizes as well as educational information regarding how to select bonsai material from nursery stock. While dinner is provided at BABA, please bring your own sack lunch. To reserve your spot on the bus, mail your check payable to ABAS to Sylvia Anderson, club treasurer, at 3544 Driver Way Antelope, CA. 95844. Local bonsai clubs have also been invited to participate so register early to insure your seat on the bus. Cost is $40 person. No refunds will be given. Last day to register is March 1. New Member Welcome Susan Sparks has volunteered to be our new member greeter at our regular meetings. She will provide information, answer questions, explain club benefits and encourage visitors to join our club. She hopes to gather a list of Resource Members By Region that can help new members close by to get started in Bonsai. If you can help, contact Susan. SGAC Spring Sale March 16&17 While doing your repotting this year remember the Garden Center Spring sale is a great place to donate or sell on consignment all those items that seem to be around and never get used. Pots, plants, tools and anything else garden related are welcome. Also consider donating a couple hours either day to help out at our table and check out what the other clubs are doing. Signup sheets will be at the February Meeting and donations/consignments can be brought in Friday afternoon or during the sale.
