SANTA S SENIORS WITH MAY BIRTHDAYS Marked with * 80 Years or Older (907) 488-4663 NEWS santaseniors@alaska.net MAY 2018 VOLUME IV Dear Senior Friends, 101 E. 5th Avenue North Pole, Alaska 99705 By the time you read this I will be well on my way to Slovenia, and Croatia for three weeks with my Grand Daughter, Morgen. This is in honor of her graduating from the University of Alaska. I am so proud of her! Can I ask for your help in furnishing the Café Room of our newly remodeled Center? We would like to buy new round tables and chairs, hopefully doing this solely by donations. We are looking for the best deals while still having comfortable chairs. So the total price is still unknown. If you would like to help, just contact Jana or any of the Board Members. Any amount will help. Above and beyond the price of the new Café tables and chairs the money could be used for other furnishings and equipment still needed for our new Center. Thanks in advance for your generosity. MELANOMA AWARENESS MONTH MAY May is Melanoma Awareness Month. With longer days in the sun, it is a good time to remind everyone to wear sun protection and to get cancer screenings. Taking precautions and early detection can be key to stopping this skin cancer. For more information visit www.curemelanoma.org. ******************************** Our Senior Center Renovation is nearing its end and we are so excited. Along with our newly remodeled building we would like to have new furnishings for the Café area. We are taking up a fund to be able to purchase 4 tables and 24 chairs. We kicked off this effort at April s Birthday Luncheon raising $138.76. We also had two members commit to purchase 2 of the 4 tables we need. If you would like to make a donation toward this cause please stop by the Moose or you can send it in the mail to 101 E. 5th Ave. North Pole, AK 99705. APRIL BIRTHDAY LUNCHEON HIGHLIGHTS We had a wonderful time at the April Birthday Luncheon. We had Art Nash with the Cooperative Extension Service come talk to us about emergency preparedness. Art shared that their mission is to cooperate with people. He really enjoys hearing stories and gaining knowledge from Alaska Homesteaders. Art provided us with a emergency preparedness checklist, and also some information on what to do before, during, and after a natural disaster in Alaska. This booklet written by Art Nash also includes a section on preparedness specifically for elderly persons and people with disabilities. I have a copy of these at the Moose if you are interested. Pictured below is Volunteer of the Month Sharron Hunter. Sharron is such a blessing to our center. Sharron can always be found helping out in some way, most always behind the scene. Sharron your efforts do not go un-noticed, we see you. Congratulations Sharron and Thank you for your selfless contributions to our center!
