Coaching through Transformation West Midlands Coaching Conference 2010 John Whitmore 2 nd November 2010 www.performanceconsultants.com 1

Past Experience Recall a grandparent or teacher who had a very positive impact on you. What did they do that you liked so much? (attitude and behaviour) How did you feel about yourself? 2

They Treated me as an equal Listened to my point of view Believed that I could Challenged me Fun, enthusiasm Safe, cared for, support Trust, respect Gave me time and full attention 3

If felt. Special Valued Confident Self-belief 4

OUR WORKING CONTEXT Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is an attitude, a way of being Coaching is a behaviour, the practice of EQ Both are valuable life skills which can be developed 5

POTENTIAL How much of our total potential do we normally express? 40% What is the principal p inner obstacle that prevents it manifesting? FEAR 6

The opponent within one s own head is more daunting than the one on the other side of the net. 7

Our performance equals our potential minus our internal interferences, of which fear of failure is the greatest. 8

The primary goal of the coaching is to eliminate the internal obstacles to performance, learning and enjoyment. 9

AWARENESS RESPONSIBILITY Self-Realised High Quality Relevant Input The Choice to Commit to take Action 10

The Global Context Quantitative external knowledge, or technical advance, has decimated our Qualitative internal wisdom. Wisdom ensures that we use our knowledge responsibly for the good of all. We failed. 11

Fifth : Integral Psychology All there is; Whole system Fourth : Transpersonal Psychology Self Realisation - Responsibility Third : Humanistic Psychology Self Actualisation - Awareness Second : Behavioural & Cognitive i Change outer behaviour First : Psychoanalysis We are our history 12

The Transpersonal It is a whole system psychology, One that includes the spiritual Carl Jung, Roberto Assagioli Asians make no separation. Academic psychology is failing us by denying or ignoring it. 13

Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs Self-Realisation 1800 2000 Self- actual. Self-Belief Status & Recognition Social & Belonging Security & Shelter Basic Survival 14

Developmental Journey CRISIS OF DUALITY THE HIGHER SELF CRISIS OF MEANING Psychological / Quantitative/Achievement 15

values passion skills role model purpose 16

The Global Context Hierarchy is in decline and decay, to be replaced by Self-Responsibility. Corporate and Political leadership has lost public respect and support globally. One of the key outcomes of coaching is personal responsibility, and the profession exists to meet this need. 17

MULTIPLICITY There are times when I look over the various parts of my character with perplexity. I recognise that I am made up of several persons and that the person that at the moment has the upper hand will inevitably give place to another Somerset Maugham 18

Who are you? 19

CAST OF CHARACTERS fanatic crusader rebel bitch hedonist bully nice guy charmer perfectionist control freak skeptic victim 20

SUB PERSONALITIES Are identifications with: Roles (father, worker, boss) Functions or job titles (accountant, doctor) Objects (house, car, collections) Personality states (joy, anger, anxiety) Psychological formations (winner, victim) Cultural, racial, social, political groups 21

Sub Personalities are constellations of habit patterns, traits, exist at various levels of complexity, some are opposites, some interrelated they emerge, develop, integrate, reform their core is a need and a quality 22

4 Phases of Harmonisation 1. Recognition 2. Acceptance 3. Cooperation 4. Integration Performance Consultants 2002 23

Self-Management The I Sub-personalities 24

Characteristics of the I Consciousness (Awareness) Humility Will, Choice (Responsibility) Will Coaching Jim Collins Self-accepting, self-directing Free from distortion, restriction Individuality, identity Stillness, constancy, continuity 25

The Global Context Consumerism, (ever more production, consumption, and emission) is totally incompatible with Eco-Sustainability. (Govt seeks 80% reduction of emissions by 2050) The capitalist notion of continuing economic growth is unsustainable, and irresponsible ibl. To meet the goal, we need a huge global recession! 26

Social Justice People Serve the Economy now but in the future The Economy must Serve People 27

Values Values emerge from within during personal development Values that are not adopted from parents, social norms or religion Values that are all inclusive Ethical behaviour that reflects those values 28

Conditioning i Religious imperatives Parental Expectations Conforming to Social norms Old assumptions and beliefs Cultural conditioning 29

Whole Systems Change at level of consciousness deeper than its manifestation. The whole system must be addressed. Natural Systems Natural systems are those that mirror biology from which we must learn; known also as Bio-mimicry. 30

Qualities of New Leaders Emotional Intelligence Coaching principles Wisdom before knowledge Intentionality and passion Whole system vision Natural systems application Agility and Resilience Authenticity and Humility Servant Leadership Self-awareness, self-knowledge 31
