September s Secret Sister Our September Secret sister hails from western Pennsylvania. She was raised on a dairy farm. The farm was in her mother s side of the family for 141 years. Her father sold the farm to a neighbor, who does not keep it in good shape. She taught fourth grade for 4 years and even had her brother in school. Then she was an elementary supervisor for 7 years. Deciding she wanted to live elsewhere, she resigned and moved to York County. For 6 years she was an advanced teaching assistant, then earned her reading supervisor degree from Millersville. She taught in the middle and high schools. Penn State is her favorite team! She loves retirement and loves to travel! She has been to all 50 states which includes riding a mule into the Grand Canyon, Volksmarch in 48 states, twice walked up the backside of the mountain and out onto the arm of Crazy Horse Monument. Foreign countries include eastern, central and western Canada, Puerto Rico, Greek Islands, France, Spain, Turkey, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal and Mexico. She loved visiting the Sistine Chapel and Venice. Someday she would like to visit Italy again. A not so pleasant adventure happened in Cancun where a scorpion crossed the bottom of the bed! A new room was obtained right away! Her favorite pastimes include cooking, needlework and reading. She takes 3 or 4 cooking classes a year at The Kitchen Shop in Carlisle where a number of different chefs teach. Can you name our Secret Sister? Find out at our September meeting if you are correct!

Time to Pay Your Dues It's time to pay your dues for 2017-18. Dues are $100.00. Please make your checks payable to Beta Beta. If you are attending the September meeting, please plan to pay your dues then. If you can't be at the September meeting, please mail your dues to me as soon as possible: Eleanor Lawyer 3600 Cypress Court Dover PA 17315. Thanks for taking care of this so that I can send our dues to state within the timeline they have set up. From the Fall Keystonian, State President Barbara Gasperini has challenged each member to board a new ship on her DKG journey. So how about leadership? Have you ever served as our chapter's president, first or second vice president, secretary, treasurer, or chaired a committee? If you think you can't lead as an officer, please reconsider. You have already proven your leadership abilities by leading in the classroom, your school building, your church, and community. You were asked to join DKG because of your outstanding qualities. Each of you has the capacity to lead. All of your Beta Beta sisters will support, encourage, and help you. If you have a particular interest in a position, please let me know by October. If you have questions about a position, ask the current sister who is in that role. After the October meeting, the nominations committee will be meeting and filling the officers' positions. We must have a slate and vote on our officers at the December meeting. The new president will fill the committee chairs and their members. If you have a particular committee that you would like to chair or serve on, please let the new president know in December as she will need to complete her list by March. I ask each one of you to sincerely consider how you can be of service to our chapter. Serving in a leadership role is so rewarding, giving one much self-satisfaction knowing you are

contributing to a meaningful organization. The biggest bonus is the relationships you build with your sisters as you work side by side with them. I welcome any dialog and questions about our chapter's future and its leadership. Pat Walker, Nominations Chairperson Remembrance If you know of any sister that should receive a card because of illness or death of a close relative, please tell Ella Jane Hess either by phone or email. Request For Help I received this e-mail from our state president and here is a way you can directly help our DKG members in Texas. Thanks for considering donating. Crystal Dear Chapter Presidents, I have been approached as to members donating to help our sisters in Houston, Texas. DKG International Emergency Fund functions as our State Emergency Fund does. Your Chapter could send your donations to help our sisters in a great way. Check the DKG website for help. Click on Donate To DKG then Click on Emergency Fund and follow the instructions. Let us help those in need. Thank you for your concern. Always, Barbara Barbara Gasperini Alpha Alpha State President, Pennsylvania Org

Crystal will be in contact with appropriate members about the summer meetings to organize the 2017-2018 year. They will be held at Crystal s home. Our speaker for the evening was Bill Kohler, a veteran himself and an advocate for veterans. He spoke a little about the treatment of troops when they return from deployment. However, since the recent loss of his son from DIPG, he has become an advocate for informing state representatives about DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma) and the need for funding for Pediatric cancer research. He also announced that May 17 th was DIPG Awareness Day in the state. A big thank you to the Projects/World Fellowship committees for the delicious refreshments. Adjournment Respectfully submitted, Kimberly S. Zarfoss, (substituting for Emily Olenick)
