Physical Education Department Class List Physical Education Flowchart The goal of the Physical Education Department is to provide a daily program of activities which will promote a lifetime of healthy fitness habits. Skill development, understanding of rules, knowledge of the game, and good sportsmanship are all vital aspects of a wellrounded Physical Education student. The staff at PVHS believes that the physically gifted as well as students of all shapes, conditions and sizes have an equal place in our program. The units within our program are geared towards building self-esteem, selfconfidence, self-respect, and respect of others. We strive to model the following content standards: 1. Demonstrate knowledge and competency in motor skills, movement patterns and strategies needed to perform a variety of physical activities. 2. Achieve a level of physical fitness for health and performance while demonstrating knowledge of fitness concepts, principles and strategies.

3. Demonstrate knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles and strategies as they apply to the learning and performance of various physical activities. Students will be expected to: 1. Be on time and dress out in the proper Pioneer Valley High School P.E. uniform (See your PE teacher to purchase the following: Shirt $7; Shorts $10 or Sweats $13) - refusal to dress out will result in a referral. 2. Utilize loaner clothes when necessary (School I.D. required) - continual use will negatively affect your grade. 3. Understand that unacceptable behavior will not be tolerated at any time and will result in a discipline referral. 4. Understand that P.E is a participatory course which requires daily attendance in order to earn credit. 5. Understand that absences and points lost from loaner clothes can be made up every Monday - check with your teacher for details (Dates and times should be posted in the each locker room). 6. Understand that an excessive amount of absences, enrolling in a course late in the term, or a lack of participation due to prolonged illness or injury, may result in partial credits being earned or a temporary exemption being granted. In the event of a temporary exemption, students will be required to make up the P.E. units at a later date. 7. Understand that each instructor will base grades on attendance, proper dress, positive participation in the assigned activity, demonstration of physical fitness and skill improvement, completion of various written assignments and tests. P.E. Graduation Requirements All students must successfully pass 20 units of P.E. to meet PVHS Graduation requirements. All freshmen must take P.E. their first year of enrollment. The remaining units towards graduation must be taken in years 10-12. P.E. credits are given for Advanced Sports P.E. one time only and count as 5 units toward the 20 unit graduation requirement. This does not limit the amount of advanced classes a student athlete may take, only the credit given towards the P.E. graduation requirement. Since Physical Fitness is a life-long endeavor, the P.E. staff at PVHS highly encourages all students to take four years of P.E. and expose themselves to a wide variety of physical education electives. Course Title: Specialty P.E. / Adaptive P.E. The classification of Specialty Physical Education denotes a special program need or an individual that may require a modified activity for a short period of time due to an injury or illness. Adaptive P.E. refers to students whose level/limit of performance identifies them with certain disabilities and thus may need special care or attention. Course Title: P.E. 9

Length: Two (or one) Terms Grade Level: 9 Prerequisite: None Homework: Approximately 1 hour per week The purpose of this course is to introduce 9th graders to a sampling of activities that are offered at Pioneer Valley High School. It is the goal of the P.E. Department to get students excited about physical activity as a healthy means to relieving the stresses of every day life. We hope that the students will chose to continue their investment in themselves by maintaining the fitness goals developed during their 9 PE course. Social interaction at this Grade Level is paramount and through an introduction of a variety of team sports the department hopes to foster an environment that promotes the creation of new relationships within each co-educational class. Activities may include the basic aquatic principles of buoyancy and general gymnastic skills. In addition, three of the following sporting activities will be introduced: Flag Football, Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Ultimate Frisbee, Frisbee Golf, Hockey, Tennis, Pickle Ball, and Softball. Each student will develop and work toward a personalized fitness program while preparing for the State Physical Fitness Tests. Course Title: P.E. 10-12 Grade Level: 10 Prerequisite: Freshman P.E. This stage of the Pioneer Valley High School P.E. program is more specialized and intense in nature. Students will be offered a variety of team sports as noted in grade 9, but will analyze the skills and strategies in greater depth in order to apply biomechanical principles to a variety of movements. It is our goal that students will be able to demonstrate some mastery of skills in a variety of games, sports, and dances. In doing so, we feel that this will help to encourage more students to become active participants in our school wide intramural programs. In addition, elective offerings emphasizing personal defense, dance, and general body toning will be offered year round each and every block. Finally, during these years of study, students will develop a lifetime plan for physical fitness and will be informed as to the many options they have in regards to the multitude of recreational activities outside of the school environment for their own pursuit of individual excellence. They will also know about career opportunities in physical education and other related fields of study.
