1 CURRIULUM Course Title: Physical Education I/II Course Description: As physical fitness becomes increasingly popular in today s society so does the need to educate our youth on the importance of keeping physically fit for life. It is the intent of Physical Education I/II to give students the opportunity to participate in activities that will not only help them become more physically fit, but will also train them to become fit for life. This program includes skill development and the application of rules and strategies of complex difficulty in various movement forms which might include the following: 1. health-related fitness activities (cardiorespiratory endurance, muscle strength, flexibility and body composition), 2. aerobic exercise, 3. team sports, 4. individual sports, 5. outdoor pursuits, 6. dance, 7. recreational games 8. lifetime leisure activites. Ongoing assessment includes class preparedness (dress), participation, positive behavior, worksheets, tests (written and fitness). Course Objectives: Demonstrate the ability to use and appreciate activity-specific skills Develop outdoor and lifelong leisure pursuits. Synthesize previously learned strategies into advance game strategies. Identify available community resources that promote an active lifestyle. Identify physical activities that contribute to the improvement of specific fitness components. Identify and evaluate personal physiological response to exercise. Demonstrate safe and appropriate use and care of equipment and facilities. Understand benefits of physical education on social and emotional well-being. Develop strategies for inclusion of others in physical activity. Identify positive aspects of participation in several different physical activities. Essential Questions: What is the relationship between one s long term health and lifestyle choices? Why is exercise important to one s overall health? How can specific fitness components be used to evaluate one s level of health and fitness. How does participation in physical education activities contribute to one s mental, social and emotional health? 2 INDIANA STATE STANDARDS DESIRED RESULTS Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in many forms and proficiency in a few forms Movement Forms Demonstrate the ability to use and appreciate activityspecific skills Movement Forms Exhibit the ability to synthesize and perform creative rhythmic movement patterns with increasing degrees of difficulty Movement Forms Develop outdoor and lifelong leisure pursuits Movement Forms Develop specific skills at an advanced or skilled performance level. Standard 2: Applies movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills Motor Skills Synthesize previously learned strategies into advanced game strategies Motor Skills Analyze and evaluate information about complex motor (movement) activities that lead to improved physical performance. Standard 3: Exhibits a physically active lifestyle Active Lifestyle Identify available community resources that promote an active lifestyle Active Lifestyle Identify physical activities that contribute to the improvement of specific fitness components (i.e., cardiovascular, strength, body composition, flexibility) Active Lifestyle Participate regularly in physical activities (minimum of 30 minutes a day, 3 to 4 times per week) that contribute to improved physical fitness and wellness. Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness Physical Fitness Create a personal program to achieve and maintain an optimal level of personal fitness Physical Fitness Identify and evaluate personal physiological response to exercise Physical Fitness Demonstrate knowledge and an understanding of basic principles of exercise physiology, nutrition and chemical substances and their effects on the physical performance of the body.
