ANNUAL PROGRAM PLANNING WORKSHEET (APPW) Program: Kinesiology Planning Year: 2014-15 Last Year CPPR Completed: 2013 Unit: Kinesiology, Health and Athletics Cluster: Math, Science, Kinesiology, Nursing, Biology, and Athletics Next Scheduled CPPR: 2018 NARRATIVE: APPW Use the following narrative outline and be brief and concise: I. Program Support of District Mission, Institutional Goals, Institutional Objectives, and/or Institutional Learning Outcomes: Based on the data below, the Kinesiology program has assisted in the achievement of several Institutional Goals and Objectives. Program Mission The mission of the kinesiology program is to introduce students to the discipline of kinesiology and/or exercise science, excite them about the educational and career opportunities therein, and support student transfers to the four year college/university or professional practice ranks. Program Vision The vision for the kinesiology programs includes maintaining a quality Associate Degree of Transfer as well as, to the extent possible, aligning coursework with the articulation standards to transfer to Cal Poly. Program Outcomes for Kinesiology: A. Summarize the role of the kinesiology professional as a promoter of lifetime wellness and physical activity. B. Identify the scope of kinesiology as a discipline. C. Analyze the sub-disciplines identified within the kinesiology discipline including: exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor behavior, sport psychology, the sociology of sport, sport medicine, and sport philosophy. D. Apply the basic principles of exercise physiology, functional anatomy, motor behavior, sport medicine, and biomechanics. E. Summarize the career opportunities found within the discipline of kinesiology including physical therapy, coaching, sport management, physical educator, sport medicine, and fitness/wellness professional. Goal 1: San Luis Obispo County Community College District will build a sustainable base of enrollment by effectively responding to the needs of its local service area. 1 S a n L u i s O b i s p o C o u n t y C o m m u n i t y C o l l e g e D i s t r i c t
Goal 2: The degree program supports Institutional Objective 2.1, Increase the capture rate of the local 24 40 age cohort by 2% annually, because over 55% of its students population from this cohort. Moreover, Institutional Goal 5 states, San Luis Obispo County Community College District will strengthen its partnerships with local educational institutions, civic organizations, businesses, and industries. The faculty whithin the program are working with local leaders in events such as the SLO Marathon and City to Sea to promote hands on student learning. Moreover, discussion regarding the APPW has led to unit plan requests that align with increasing the relationship between program faculty, students, and the community. II. Program Data Analysis and Program-Specific Measurements This should be an update on the data analysis from the last CPPR Introduction The following section includes charts and information on the lone lecture course from the Kinesiology Department that is the foundation for the degree, Kinesiology 201: Introduction to Kinesiology. In addition, information has been provided with regards to all the KINA activity courses since some, and eventually all, will be a component of the degree. Finally, information has been provided with regard to the high demand courses, Human Anatomy and Physiology, that are in the Biological Sciences department, but are the two other required course in the degree. Enrollment The enrollment for both the KINE 201 and KINA courses continues to increase. Enrollment continues to be well above the college average in all courses in the degree. The KINE 201 has doubled its annual enrollment since 2012. Moreover, the enrollment in KINA activity classes remains high, in-spite of the hit these courses took when the State instituted the no repeat policy for activity classes. This demand has led to discussions regarding instructional needs for both KINE and KINA courses and is reflected in the current unit plan requests. And, while the overall trend in the college has been to lose students, the enrollment data show a robust, popular, and in-demand degree program. 7 S a n L u i s O b i s p o C o u n t y C o m m u n i t y C o l l e g e D i s t r i c t
A. Enrollment (Insert Data Chart) Enrollment for Kinesiology 201 continues to increase and is well above the collge demand. This demand aligns with the overall trend in a demand for movement professionals. Moreover, although KINA class enrollment has declined due to the state no-repeat rule, demand for these classes remains above the college average. HEED 204 has changed from 2 to 3 units due to the Kinesiology ADT requiring the additional unit for transferability. The addition of AED and Personal Safety Healthy Lifestyle Issues were added to the curriculum, along with the ability to take the AED certification test. In addition, this fall we updated the technology in the gym lobby, adding internet and a wide screen TV, to access the Red Cross Specifications for the additional curriculum, and address the additional technology needed to provide an updated teaching environment for this course. 8 S a n L u i s O b i s p o C o u n t y C o m m u n i t y C o l l e g e D i s t r i c t

2 Assessment Methods Plan (identify assessment instruments, scoring rubrics, SLO mapping diagrams) 3 Assessment Administration Plan 4 Assessment Results Summary (summarize Data) 5 Discussion of Assessment Procedure and Results, and Effectiveness of Previous Improvement Plans 6 Recommended Changes & Plans for Implementations for Improvement 7 Description or evidence of Assessment of SLO #4 Student surveys in KINE 201 Intro to Kinesiology, Fall 2015 Student Essays Fall 2015 (August and December) Student surveys administered Fall 2015 (90 students) Student essays, pre and post, administered Fall 2015 (90 students) In response to how well the students could identify the careers within the kinesiology profession, 65% of students responded fairly well or very well. Moreover, approximately 60% of students reported as fairly well or very well their level of awareness regarding the scope of the discipline. Student essays (pre) in 2015 asked students to comment on their understanding/awareness regarding the career opportunities related to earning a Kinesiology degree (undergraduate and graduate) as well as the scope of the discipline. Based on data collected in previous semesters, as well as the pre-essay administered in Fall 2015, it is clear that although more than a majority of students are aware of careers related to the kinesiology degree, and many have some understanding of the scope of the discipline, many are not aware of the variety of careers and options available to them. Moreover, more than 75% of the students reported that they believed the profession of kinesiology related only to coaches, teachers, and fitness leaders. As compared to previous years, student surveys and pre-essay responses indicate a dslight increase in student understanding of careers within the kinesiology discipline. The increase is aligns with the increase in demand for the degree.. A few changes have been implemented to improve this SLO. The faculty discussed the need to promote the program both within the college and local community. We are requesting money for promotional and educational materials as well as material that can be used to inform students currently in the program. On-going dialog has occurred in the fall and spring with other faculty in the Kinesiology Program. 16 S a n L u i s O b i s p o C o u n t y C o m m u n i t y C o l l e g e D i s t r i c t
