Damage to lining of blood vessel High LDL, hypertension, cigarettes, elevated homocysteine, viral or bacterial infection Stimulates an inflammatory response and free radicals are produced Particles of LDL become trapped in vessel walls Free Radicals oxidize the LDL cholesterol, and macrophages engulf it Macrophages swell with the oxidized LDL, and become the cells of plaque Plaque becomes hardened with minerals C-reactive protein-released during the acute phase of inflammation; used as a marker for predicting heart attacks

Recommendations for Reducing Cancer Risk Choose a diet rich in a variety of plant-based foods. Maintain a healthy weight and be physically active. Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all. Select foods low in fat and salt. Prepare and store foods safely, don t eat charred foods. Do not smoke or use tobacco.
